Sleep problems cost billions

Insomnia and sleep apnoea are turning us into major health service consumers, causing us to be less productive at work, and may even lead to serious accidents.

If you can’t sleep ot night, you’re not alone. Around ten per cent of the population suffer from insomnia, where you have trouble falling a sleep, wake up frequently ot night, and still feel tired when the morning comes.

- When you feel tired ond indisposed, your performance at work suffers, says Børge Sivertsen, professor ot UiB’s Department of Clinical Psychology and sen lor researcher at the Norwegion Institute of Public Health. Sleep apnoea is a more several problem, offecting four to five per cent of the population. Sufferers can stop breathing for up to 40 seconds several times during the night, putting o huge strain on the heart.

As a result, they have many micro-amakenings that stop them from reaching deep sleep.

Bad night, bad day

According to the sleep sdentist, o recently published study from the United States puts the annual losses from insomnia alone ot 63.2 billion US dollars. Only a third of this was due to actual obsence from work; two thirds was due to o loss in productivity while ot work.

- An Australian study found that about two per cent of Australia’s GDP is lost due to sick leove coused bu insomnia and sleep apnea disorder. This shows how common these diseases are and how much they affect work, Sivertsen says.

Danger on the roads

In their own woys, each sleep disorder also has a strong impact on accident statistics. For example, lorry drivers have sedentary jobs, ond this increases the risk of developing obesitu and sleep apnoea.

- The diseose is a major cause of the many traffic accidents on American roads, Sivertsen says. As for insomnia, drug use can cause problems. Sivertsen’s studies show that sedotives can cause users to feel less rested during the daytime.

- Sleep medication may work in the short term, but after six weeks of us© we noticed a decrease in deep sleep. Sleep may be uninterrupted, but you may not necessarily get quality sleep, he says.

Testing every treotment there is

Sleep disorder sufferers ore often major health care users, which leods to on increase in social costs.

- When you feel bod, you will try every treotment there is. There is an overconsumption of alternative methods amongst insomnia sufferers. They often consume too much alcohol and visit their GPs, psychologists, physiotheropists, and chiropractors more often.

Sivertsen wants insomnia treotment to became more accessible, and to include cognitive behavioural therapy.

- Several recent studies show that the internet can be used to offer good and cost-effective methods of treatment. This is particularly true in areas where sleep centers are few and far between, he suggests.

BSC Survey: couples having problems in the bedroom

Better Sleep Council finds that one in four Americans in a relationship would rather sleep alone.

A recent survey conducted by the Better Sleep Council to learn about couples’ sleep habits and problems shows that 26 percent of U.S. couples get a better night’s sleep when they’re alone in bed versus sleeping with their partner.

“Most people would agree that a lack of sleep can cause grumpiness and irritability, but The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention went so far as to declare insufficient sleep ‘a public health epidemic,’” said Karin Mahoney,  director of communications, the Better Sleep Council. “That’s a powerful statement, and one we felt was worth examining further.

Our survey clearly demonstrates that couples often face obstacles to getting better sleep, and that can add stress to the relationship.”

The survey results (and accompanying infographic) demonstrate the importance of couples working together to create a healthy sleep environment by selecting the quality and type of bedding they need to achieve a restful night’s sleep. For example, the survey shows cuddling close brings comfort for some – 13 percent say they “spoon” or cuddle close the whole night through - while a large majority (63 percent) prefer to sleep without touching their partner, and almost one in 10 report sleeping in a different room.

“We know how important sleep is to health and happiness, and studies show having a lifelong partner can provide some of these same benefits,” said Lissa Coffey, lifestyle and relationship expert. “It’s interesting to examine the two issues together and see how they might be working against one another. Couples seeking healthier, happier lives and relationships often need to consider how they can improve how they sleep together.”

So what are couples’ issues in the bedroom?

Disagreements over temperature (i.e., one likes it warm, one likes it cool) top the list of partners’ complaints, with tossing/turning and snoring rounding out the top three. In addition, 28 percent of respondents point to the quality, age or firmness of their mattress as an obstacle to getting a good night’s sleep with their partner.

“The importance of bedroom atmosphere, sleep habits and mattress preference become a little more complicated when two people are involved,” said Mahoney.“ Agreeing on bedtime, bed coverings or even bed size and mattress type needs to be a two-person decision, if both are going to sleep comfortably every night.”

While 85 percent of respondents report that they have problems sleeping at night, men claim to have less trouble sleeping than women. And it seems that as people age, they tend to sleep apart more, with couples 55 years and older being the least likely to cuddle and spoon and the most likely to sleep in separate bedrooms.

Does this mean that the American couple dreams of sleeping apart?

Not exactly. Only 18 percent of respondents said that their dream home has separate bedrooms. “Being close to the one you love can foster health and happiness, but not if it affects your sleep,” said Coffey. “The key for couples? Work together to create a healthy sleep environment that meets both of your needs.”

Are You Getting Enough Sleep?

An evaluation and solution formula by Ashley Sleep who offers five tips for overcoming common culprits of sleeplessness.

From snoring partners and lumpy mattresses, to old pillows and bedhogging pets, there’s a lot going on in bedrooms around the world. Unfortunately, it’s wreaking some serious havoc on the quality – and quantity – of sleep we’re getting.

“According to some experts, the average American sleeps just six-anda- half hours a night during the workweek and just over seven hours on weekends – that’s well below the suggested 8-plus hours per night,” says Denny Bradford, Director of Ashley Sleep. “The fact is, sleep plays a pivotal role in our health. A good night’s rest can help boost your immune system, making you less susceptible to disease and illness – and some studies even suggest that proper sleep can energize your body’s metabolism, making it easier to maintain a healthy weight.”

So what’s keeping us awake? Here’s a look some factors that can often play a major role in sleeplessness:
*A Snoring Spouse
* Pets in the Bed
* Partner’s Motion

If these sound all-too familiar, Ashley Sleep offers five easy ways to improve your sleep so you can seize your day, every day:
Decide if your mattress is a good fit. If you have a spouse that tosses and turns, or pets that share your bed, a memory foam mattress – or gel mattress with memory foam – may be a good fit. Memory foam contours the mattress to the body and helps alleviate pinches and pains that can cause restlessness. It also absorbs motion so that each partner is supported independently. Control the snoring. Since allergens can be a cause of snoring, make sure to rid the room of any potential snoring hazards like dust, mildew, fungus and pet hair. You can do this by replacing pillows yearly and by regularly washing sheets and keeping the room clean and vacuumed. Latex Mattresses may also help with snoring since they’re more resistant to bacteria, mold, mildew and dust-mites. If you’ve tried every possible remedy and the snoring just won’t go away, it may be time to see a professional.

Take advantage of the weather! With the fall season officially upon us, the cooler weather can actually work to your advantage – and save you some money on your heating bill.

Optimal sleeping temperatures in the bedroom should be somewhere between 68 and 72 degrees – so no need to crank up the heat too high. Fall’s shorter days can be beneficial to your sleep, as well, since the sun is early to set and late to rise. A darker room means better sleep.

Keep the family room OUT of the bedroom. A bedroom should be a personal sanctuary, an inviting place that reflects your personality and taste. Unfortunately, many people also use their bedroom as a home office or TV room. Reserving this space for sleep alone will lead to a more restful environment and better night’s sleep. Be routine. Keeping a nighttime routine isn’t just for kids; it can also help improve your level of sleep. Whether it’s a hot bath, a book, journaling, or a cup of decaf tea that does the trick, be sure relax and unwind before bedtime so you can be at your best the next day.

ISPA welcomes many new members in 2012

International Sleep Products Association performed well in 2012 and welcomed nearly 80 new members from different parts of the world including Turkey.

Membership in the International Sleep Products Association ( ISPA ) is strong and growing. ISPA welcomed nearly 80 new members in 2012, with many of the new members reflecting the industry’s diversity: start-up companies, veteran mattress producers, component suppliers, and ISPA ‘s newest membership category, manufacturers of top-of-bed accessories.

“We at Boyd Specialty Sleep Products see the value in belonging to a uniting front like ISPA ,” noted new ISPA member and Boyd Specialty Sleep Products President Denny Boyd. “We look forward to actively participating in ISPA and helping advance the interests of this industry.”

“In addition to being a part of a worthwhile professional community, we work collectively as a united group, which exponentially increases our chances of success,” said ISPA Chair Gerry Borreggine. ISPA has delivered strong member benefits and services since it was founded nearly 100 years ago in 1915. All programs and initiatives are set to support the mattress industry’s growth, profitability and stature. Government advocacy was especially active last year as ISPA successfully defeated several state bills that would have undercut industry efforts to generate an efficient and responsible mattress recycling program.

New member Conor Stapelton of Gabriel Scientific and SleepAngel echoed these sentiments. “SleepAngel is a start-up business aiming to get big quickly. At this point in our business life cycle, we depend upon the network, resources and lobbying of an umbrella organization to advance our own interests. ISPA helped us to expand our market reach and influence stakeholders in our marketplace that otherwise would not have been available to us. We hope our association will continue to be a long and caring one.”

“We would not be who we are today without the strong and continued support of our members,” noted ISPA President Ryan Trainer. “ISPA is deeply engaged today in addressing several important industry-wide challenges and opportunities. Now more than ever it is important for this industry to speak and act with a united voice. We look forward to working with these new member companies and welcome their input and contributions to ISPA’s programs.”

Therapedic International ’s Agility Beats the Rollator Test

Coming off a very encouraging preview at the High Point Market this past fall, Therapedic International officially released its new Agility line at the World Market Center during the recent winter Las Vegas Market here. The product was enthusiastically received by the dealers who saw it at the Therapedic showroom, with many dealers placing orders for it, for immediate delivery.

The four-number line-up will retail from $1,299/queen size to $2,999/queen size. All models feature a bright floral cover design, accented by the Pantone color of the year, tangerine, border. Many dealers commented on the attractive and attention getting look of the product. The distinguishing feature of all the Agility models is the micro pocket coils and the mini-micro pocket coils used in the construction.

The pocket coils are made unlike any other, in that they are not sewn or glued together. Instead, they are held together by a three-way stretch fabric which gives the coils a free range of movement, allowing them to respond to surface movement in a complete 360-degreee circumference, giving the mattress a very agile sleep surface.

The coil counts in the individual models range from 736/queen in the opening model, to 5472/queen coils in the top model. Of interest to many dealers at this market showing was the durability testing that was just released on the product. The testing was done at Hickory Springs in Conover, NC. The product performed superbly on all testing completed under laboratory conditions.

A Hexagonal Juggernaut Rollator Test was performed to simulate ten years of mattress life usage. 100,000 cycles of this test were performed. The entry level model lost just 13% firmness at the conclusion of  this test.

The top model lost only 3% firmness. Even more impressive was the fact that the models sustained between 0% and 3% of its percentage profile height loss during the testing. “I have tested many mattresses over the course of my career,” said Jimmy Bush, executive vice president of Hickory Springs, “and I’ve never seen a product perform as well as Agility did during durability testing.” “This is a tremendous endorsement about the support and durability characteristics of Agility,” said Gerry Borreggine, president and CEO of Therapedic.

Latest furniture trends displayed, future trends set!

After seven intense days, the imm cologne closed its doors with good to very good results. 1,250 companies from more than 50 countries showcased the latest trends for the coming year and – including estimates for the last day of the fair – attracted 142,000 visitors to Cologne.

Beds, mattress technologies and sleep products as well as their raw materials had been placed in Hall 9 and Hall 10 as always. There were quite new technologies for wooden bed systems, organic and environmentally friendly mattress production. Hall 9 had more of newest technologies and very interesting systems for quality sleep. Even if not as much as Interzum, IMM had a strong exposure of the mattress and bedding industries.

This year, there was a 13 percent rise in the internationality of the visitor structure – a significant increase. The international furnishing fair was able to report particularly positive growth in the emerging markets of Eastern Europe and Asia that are so important for the sector. “This result is a great signal for the imm cologne and confirmation of a performance befitting a leading international fair,” said a visibly satisfied Gerald Böse, CEO of  Koelnmesse.

“With this trade fair duo, we have written the next chapter in the success story of the imm cologne and LivingKitchen. Cologne is the absolute focal point of the furniture and kitchen industry – especially when it comes to business,” continues the trade fair corporation’s chief executive officer. Dirk-Uwe Klaas, Chief Executive of the Association of the German Furniture Industry (Verband der Deutschen Möbelindustrie), came to a similarly positive conclusion: “The imm cologne 2013 was an outstanding trade fair - the German furniture industry is more than satisfied. Despite the wintery weather, visitors flocked to the exhibition center in droves.

We are delighted to report numerous new contacts and customers as well as a pleasing amount of ordering activity. The marked increase in the number of foreign trade visitors is another important component for the fair’s enduring and sustainable success.”

On course for growth: internationality of visitor structure increases

A total of 142,000 visitors came to the metropolis on the banks of the Rhine. With foreign visitors accounting for a share of 42 percent (based on the trade visitor days), the imm cologne and LivingKitchen were once again very international trade shows. On the one hand there were considerably more buyers from Europe, especially from the Russian Federation and traditionally strong countries like the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Italy and Switzerland, on the other hand there was also a marked rise in the number of visitors from Asia – and especially from China.

The Public Days were also very well attended. Around 43,000 consumers came in search of inspiration from the furnishing worlds on show. “We’re delighted that the imm cologne and LivingKitchen met with such great interest from consumers too. This good result is due in no small part to the way the concept behind the trade fair duo has been expanded. We want to build on this success and increase the attractiveness of our fairs from year to year,” says Katharina C. Hamma, Chief Operating Officer at Koelnmesse.

Opinions on the trade fair: Heiner Goossens, CEO of Rolf Benz AG & Co.KG, Nagold “We had a good volume of national and international visitors and good-quality visitor volume as well. For Rolf Benz, this was a successful trade show appearance in business terms as well.”

Karl Sommermeyer, CEO of himolla Polstermöbel GmbH: “We’re pleased with how this year’s trade show went - especially because of the quality of the business we did here at the imm cologne. It was helped by the fact that, happily, the furniture business got off to a good start in January, so the dealers came to Cologne in optimistic mood.”

The perfect setting for good business: trends at the trade show This year too, exhibitors set off a real “fireworks display” of new products, providing enduring proof of their huge capacity for innovation and the industry’s multifaceted versatility.

Trends * Megatrend: the nature theme * Upholstery fabrics with subtle stripes, zigzags, floral, abstract or geometric patterns * Small, free-standing, functional upholstered furniture with soft, rounded corners and edges * Boxspring beds * Wall units (highboards, lowboards, display cabinets) * The combination of good design and good quality * Colours: strong plain colours, blue, grey * Oak in all its variations * Concealed LED technology

Sleep on your money

It is arguable if one should be so close to his money when sleeping but it is definitely an innovative design developed with the idea that one need not worry about where to keep their money or investments.

It is called Caja de Ahorros Mi Colchón, which literally allows consumers to keep money under mattress. The mattress was innovated by Paco Santos. It apparently sells for about 875 Euros. The bed is featured with a small safe inside. Paco Santos explained that people were not confident about putting their money in the bank because of obvious problems. He said, “I had a hunch that this new product would sell. You see, we’ve got big economic problems in Spain, and people have really lost confidence in the banks

Overcome your sleep disorder, loose your weigh faster” says, Gizem Seber, a dietitian and a life coach

Sleeping, indispensable for humans, is a period that the body renovates itself and muscles are built and repaired.

Duration of sleep is also related with fat index and the weight of the body. It is a scientifically tested fact that the risk of obesity is higher for those who are deprived of sleep. Those who sleep 8 hours a day are losing 56 percent more fat than those who sleep 5 hours. Those who sleep less than 5 hours, gains 300 calories more than who sleep normally. Stress caused by being awake are not the only cause of energy loss, sleep deprivation may also alter the digestive balance, so they need more sweets and energy. Consumption of some certain foods and drinks may help to get enough sleep, the scientists say. The following are advised for a comfortable sleep. Drink milk, before going to sleep as your mother have done in your childhood. It helps to go to sleep easily thanks to tryptophan it contains. An amino acid, tryptophan rich foods aredried fruits, banana and honey.Carbohydrates are acting as catalyzersto maintain the maximum level of tryptophan during night. Having wrong carbohydrates consumed late in the night may cause weight. Innocent kinds should be preferred. Instead of bread
and cheese, milk and musli, yoghurt and dried fruits are healthier choices. Having light meals one to two hours
before going to sleep helps to get into sleep. Keep away heavy meals before sleep.
Prefer not fat foods. Keep away fried, braised, and fast food especially in the evenings. Since fat are digested slowly digestion continues while in sleep. That cause trouble. Overcome your sleep disorder, loose your weigh faster” says, Gizem Seber, a dietitian and a life coach. Be careful against hidden sources of caffeine. It is a historic fact that overdoses of caffeine cause sleeping problems. Besides coffee, other drinks also contains caffeine, such as black and green tea and others. Chocolate,
carbonated beverages, even decaffeinated coffee may also contain caffeine. It is better to end consumption of caffeinated drinks completely 6 hours before going to sleep. Some medicines also may contain caffeine, especially the diuretics, drugs for influenza. Check the ingredients of your drugs. You may adjust their time of intake by asking your docs. Alcoholics help to get into sleep at the beginning however they lower the sleep quality by causing perspirations, frequent awakening and nightmares. To balance the dehydration caused by alcohol, drink more water before going to sleep. Quitting alcohol as early as possible is the better.

13 farklı renkle her yıl başka kılıf kullanılsa, 13 yıl boyunca her yıl yeni yatak odası alınmış havası oluyor.”
