Sterling Sleep introduced more improved component based sustainable mattress

IIDA/HD Product Design award winner, Sterling Sleep has introduced more improved latex and memory foam covered sustainable mattress in new incarnation yet again.

Sterling Sleep is the leading supplier of cost competitive, Eco Friendly mattresses for the Hospitality Industry. Their patented sustainable bed design allows replacement of interchangeable soiled or worn components in the room. Soiled beds come completely apart for proper cleaning. Double the comfortable service life of your beds by replacing foam and upholstered components as needed instead of replacing the complete bed.

This time more advanced technology is learnt to have been incorporated into the mattress construction. Zipper system is now being seen more enhanced, offering better user experience and convenience to replace soiled or damaged mattresses.

Mattress quality is said to be far better, resulting in better performance, comfort, safety, suitability for intended use and accessibility. Users can now replace their bed parts without anybody’s assistance in a little time.

These are remarkable enhancements which hoteliers in particular prefer. Expenses in purchasing such upholsteries by hoteliers have been pretty higher. So, it’s quite natural that they would choose to purchase cost-saving mattresses and at the same time, they wouldn’t like to compromise with mattress quality. Giving excellent sleep experience to their guests is their prime objective.

“Sterling Sleep Systems’ sleep mattresses are found out to be the best to maintain the highest level of guest comfort and satisfaction. And, their users can ensure it by reconfiguring the internal firmness and the top layer of the bed. All these we have made possible by enhancing features of our component-based latex and memory foam mattresses,” confirmed Mr. Anton Hoshchild, Vice President of Sterling Systems.

Asthma takes a toll on sleep

Physicians describe asthma as a chronic inflammatory disease of the airway that may cause shortness of breath, chest tightness, coughing and wheezing.

Over 3 million Canadians have some degree of asthma – the severity and occurrence of symptoms varies from person to person. What we often don’t realize is how asthma and its symptoms can impact sleep. A recent study completed by Brown University looked at the impact of asthma on the sleep of children, and specifically how the missed sleep affected their daily lives.

The study involved 147 children aged 6-13 who suffered from asthma. Across the study, the researchers discovered that disrupted sleep due to asthma symptoms was related to frequent school absences, limitations on activity, and a lower quality of life. Sleep deprivation must be considered by physicians as part of the complications of asthma. As asthma symptoms often worsen at night, sleep quality can become seriously compromised. Dr. Lauren Daniel, lead author of the study, explains “It is important for parents and healthcare providers to routinely monitor sleep in children with asthma to minimize sleep disruptions and ensure proper asthma control.”

Sleepless epidemic: Five ways you can avoid the “sleepocalypse”

$

Medical, psychological and societal experts agree that the average American is sleep deprived. Now we know that this affliction is partially by choice.

With decades invested in improving sleep quality, the BSC educates consumers on the link between sleep and health, as well as the role of the sleep environment, primarily through www.bettersleep.org, partner support and consumer media outreach. Based on a recent Better Sleep Council survey, half of American adults admit they are sleep deprived. And the majority of those 157 million Americans aren’t taking simple daily precautions to get better sleep – even though they know simple actions can lead to more restful nights.

Spurred by the Centers for Disease Control’s confirmation in March 2013 that insufficient sleep is a public health epidemic, the Better Sleep Council set out to prevent what it calls a “Sleepocalypse” by helping people achieve the health benefits of beter sleep. Focusing on proactive sleephealth measures all Americans can take, the non-profit research and education group identified gaps in what people SAY they believe leads to better sleep and what they actually DO to achieve a good night’s rest.

The Better Sleep Council also tested Americans’ knowledge of the mental and physical consequences of sleep deprivation.

“Simple things like turning off cell phones, not eating in bed and sleeping on a comfortable mattress rank highest on the list of missed opportunities,” said Karin Mahoney, director of communications, Better Sleep Council.

“Part of the problem is that people think they can push through their lack of sleep without negative effects. Men, in particular, are more likely to believe they can train themselves to function normally on less sleep, but studies show that just isn’t true.” In support of its “May is Better Sleep Month” campaign, the Better Sleep Council is prescribing simple changes to bedtime behaviors and sleep environments to help Americans escape the Sleepocalypse.

1) Reduce electronics use in the bedroom, specifically in bed.

Stats: 92% of Americans watch TV, check their smartphones, etc. in bed; 37% know they shouldn’t.
Science: Intense back lighting of electronics triggers stimulating chemicals in the brain that tell our bodies it’s time to be awak
Advice: “We recommend powering off 1 hour before bed and sticking to hard copies to read in bed with soft lighting.”

2) Keep a consistent bedtime and wake up time

Stats: 78% Americans don’t do this; 69% know they should.
Science: Your body uses a Circadian rhythm to regulate states of being asleep and awake; straying from your regular sleep schedule can confuse this rhythm and the effect can be felt for days. After just one night of insufficient sleep, cognitive abilities, reaction times and memory have been shown to decrease significantly, even when participants thought they were functioning relatively normally. And bad news-this effect accumulates over time. We cannot train ourselves to function as normal on less sleep.
Advice: “Consistency is important. In addition to a morning alarm clock, set a ‘bed time’ alarm that reminds you to go to bed and get a full night’s rest. Or even better, set an alarm for your nightly wind-down an hour before bedtime. (See #4)”

3) Don’t let your cell phone be a distraction.

Stats: Nearly 4 of 5 Americans don’t turn off their cell phone at bed time; 38% of 18-34 year olds use phones/tablets in bed EVERY night.
Science: Because phones – smartphones in particular – represent a source of stress during the day, their proximity to the bed can disrupt sleep – even if it doesn’t make noise during the night or is set to vibrate.
Advice: “Buy a $5 alarm clock and exercise the ‘power down’ feature as part of your bedtime routine. If that’s not enough, consider keeping your phone in a separate room. At a minimum, keep it out of reach.”

4) Have a wind-down period leading up to bed.

Stats: 3 of 4 Americans don’t; two-thirds know they should. Science: Various physical and mental lights, stress, caffeine, alcohol and many more.
Advice: “Develop a routine the last hour before bed that allows you to relax. Remove distractions that may send the wrong message to your brain. Your body needs to receive both physical and mental cues that you are ready for sleep.”

5) Make sure you have a comfortable, high-quality mattress.

Stats: 62% of Americans who sleep well “strongly agree” a comfortable mattress contributes to quality sleep, making this the top factor for them; 83% know it’s important, but only 43% actually act on it.
Science: Timely replacement and mattress quality can have a positive impact on sleep and overall quality of life.
Advice: “Do the math on how much time you spend with your bed compared to other possessions; at approximately 240 hours/month, a mattress gets more use than most major purchases other than a home.”

“Cheating yourself of sleep can lead to dire consequences over time,” said Mahoney. “While we believe strongly that the sleep advice listed here can help lead to more restful, healthful sleep, we encourage people with chronic sleep issues to speak with their doctors and address other potential health conditions.”

Ural Medikal who brought the space technology, Visco Elastic Memory Foam, to Turkey about almost 17 years ago has started providing this technology to the consumers via its own brand Visko Love since 2008.

The firm sustaining its operations only with the production of visco matresses and pillows has reached 155 distributorships in 48 provinces under the brand’s signboard at a short notice. Nilüfer Uysal Aktomas, Business Development Manager of Visko Love stating that visco technology was brought to Turkey for the first time by Ural Medical only 4 years after it was introduced to the industrial field, remarked that the first visco-gel products were produced by them. Ms. Uysal stating that right now, they have more than 300 sales points evaluated 2013 by answering our questions about the company and sector.

Can you briefly introduce yourself?

I am Nilüfer Uysal Aktomas. I have been in this sector since 2005. As of 2011, I have been working under the body of Ural Medical as Visko Love Business Development Manager. The company distinguishes from other companies in the sector with its production system and quality and has been unceasingly working to provide better products to consumers.

Can you give us information about the past and current status of Ural Medical and Visko Love?

Ural Medical is a company which has been operating since 1996. And in 2008, Visko Love has commenced its operations. Visko Love started its sales operations as corners at the department stores at the beginning. Then, the first store of Visko Love under a signboard was opened in the year of 2010 and since then, in other words in just 2 and a half years, we have reached 155 stores with its own signboards in 48 provinces. We are providing service from more than 300 sales points.

Visco technology was first brought to Turkey by Ural Medical. What exactly is visco? How is it produced?

Visco Elastic Memory Foam is a product developed by NASA in 60’s to decrease the load and pressure falling on the backbone of astronauts during space launch. The product, the patent of which belongs to NASA, is also used in medical products such as x-ray pads or in sports products such as helmets.

Visco technology is started to use in the mattress sector after 1980.  As visco technology is a product which requires experience, the number of entrepreneurs in this field was limited initially. At the beginning of 90’s, this product has been first started to be used in the matress sector by a Swiss-American partnership company. Just 4 years after this date, visco was brought to Turkey by Ural Medical.

Our company creates this product one by one from open-cell Visco Elastic material in specially designed plates. The use of plate system and high-density materials in the production of our products increase the comfort and life of the products. Visco Elastic material is an open-cell structure and smart material. The mattresses created from this material which decreases pressure and has memory start molding quickly depending on the temperature and weight as soon as contacting with body thanks to the memory cells in them.  The molding continues until the mattress gets the shape of body. The mattresses contouring the body perfectly and filling in the spaces help regulating your blood circulation by decreasing the pressure to the minimum, relieving joint pains and shaping your backbone properly. The cushions produced of the same material go through the same process or system. The cushions support neck and shoulder muscles and help eliminating the possible pain causes.

What kind of products do you have in your product range as a company?

Actually, we can group them as mattress and cushion to 2. We have different products we produce for medical stores and provide for the health sector. For example; waist cushion, bottom cushion, wheel chair cushion are some of these products. To use this mattress or cushion, it is not necessary to have any health problems. Each healthy individual can use these products.

Within our product range, we have 20 different mattress types. These range from soft and medium-hard to hard mattresses. For instance, we produce mattresses which have options like more ventilation, anti-stress, harder types. Moreover, it is not possible for any customer to come our stores and can’t find any mattress for himself. Thanks to our diverse product range, you can easily find the mattress or cushion which is most appropriate for your body shape, neck or shoulder.

First visco-gel cushions from Visko Love…

Nilüfer Uysal Aktomas, Visko love Business Development Manager said that they are the first company who produced visco and visco with gel in Turkey.

You are the first one who produced visco with gel in Turkey. What are the features of this product and what is its benefit to health?

Apart from the mattresses, we are the company who owes the most different cushion types. We also have products with gel. We are the first company who produced visco and visco with gel in Turkey. These cushions and mattresses with this gel layer cool the one using these products.

Visco is a product which molds according to your body temperature and weight and while molding, it doesn’t apply pressure to the body. Thus, the blood circulation is not interrupted while you are sleeping. As the blood circulation is interrupted while sleeping, numbness might occur and as a result people tend to toss and turn. Thanks to visco, you don’t need to turn in the bed anymore. Because it doesn’t interrupt your blood circulation and thus you don’t lose your sleep. Besides these, it relaxes the people who have joint pains and heart problems.

Can you mention your R&D studies?

Of course. First of all, I would like to say that we are expert in visco production. We can diversify visco with different densities and features. As height and weight of all the people are not the same, we cannot provide them a mattress at one type. Additionally, when some people like sleeping on soft mattresses, some can prefer hard mattresses. The densities of our mattresses range from 60 density to 130 density. Besides, we have also high density mattresses which at the same time are not hard. Furthermore, our latest mattress model is perforated. With this product, we both provide ventilation and unusual comfort. Apart from the visco with first gel application, we are working on anti-static and anti-stress mattresses and cushions consisting of Bamboo Carbon. Nano-technology product Antimic developed and patented by Sabanci University is one of the state of art technologies used in our mattresses. We are providing our products developed meticulously by us to the customers in the best way by working together with the best mattress fabric manufacturers.

What is your production capacity of Visko Love? How do you contribute to production as the business development department?

Within the factory we have in Istanbul Kavacik, we have been working on the extension of our current production facilities. We have 70 employees at this facility. Production, production planning, procurement, R&D, marketing and production management, finance and senior management departments are at these facilities.

As a Business Development Manager, I have been carrying out my duty for Product Management and Marketing. After the determination of the product that the market might demand among the product range, our position is to enable the coordination between the production employees and sales departments for the subjects like price, design, special finishing to be made on the fabric to be used, and suppliers. We are trying to coordinate the studies to sustain the operations without any problems by discussing with all the departments.

Well, what about the exportation? Where do you export your products?

Exportation is an important factor for us since the foundation of our company. This year, we have made a move and increased 40% in exportation. A large number of our production is exported. Relevant to the increasing numbers of fairs we participate each year, I can say that our exportation has improved.

We are exporting to almost all corners of the world. There are 35-40 countries we make exportation to. Among them, there are France, İtaly, Greece, Germany, Ukraine, Russia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Serbia, Israel and recently Moldova and Estonia. But the countries in Europe are our major customers. Besides these, we are also exporting to the Middle East and Turkic Republics. Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan are the most significant customers. Recently, we have been sending our products to countries within the regions of South America and North Africa.

As someone who has been working for this sector for almost 10 years, how do you evaluate 2013? How as your company?

Compared to the market, we are a young company. Even though, we weren’t able to reach our targets in the market’s depressed conditions, we have better position in comparison with the others. With the encouragement of being a new brand, we are always aiming for the sky. Since, the growth rate of an old brand and the growth rate of a new brand will not be the same. Except that, I think that there exists a little downsizing in the market. Some companies went out of the business and this has revealed the situation. Even though this is for the benefit of us, we prefer a buoyant market. If competition exists, productivity of the business increases.

In this direction, what are your plans and objectives for 2014?

We want to increase the number of distributorships and expand our distribution network rapidly. We will also renew the product range as we do each year. With more distributorship, I think that visco technology will be introduced to larger masses. At the same time, this year we will attend ISMOB and EVTEKS trade fairs. Thanks to these fairs, our aim is to be more productive in the domestic market.

Abroad, we will attend the fairs in Frankfurt, Kazakhstan, Russia and Dubai. We are of the opinion that these fairs will be influential in terms of increasing the numbers of customers abroad and improving the level of import.

Finally, would you like to add anything?

As I said before, we have a developing sector. In terms of mattress business, beds are still our rival. Considering the production of first spring mattress in the 60’s, mattresses don’t have a long history in our country. Our target group is conscious consumers who have a good purchasing power. By its nature, visco is not a cheap product. Anyways, I believe that we are providing visco to the market at affordable and fair price. Visco is a new product and its popularity increases every day. Visco is a product which is preferred by conscious customers upon researching and trying.

Last but not least, I would like to give an advice to the consumers. While trying the mattresses, it is important to lie on the mattress for a long time with the cushions. After this, they can choose the most appropriate mattress and cushion for them. By this means, they will increase the quality of sleep to the maximum.

Uyum Beds ready for 2014 with new models

“Everybody deserves to start the day rejuvenated. We have been producing quality beds for our customers to have this privilege since 1975,” says Ertan Ablak, General manager of Uyum company. He introduces his company:

On the progress of the company

It was established by two partners in 1974. In 1980 my father Sıtkı Ablak and later on we, my brother and I became partners. We have been producing in this facility of 1,150 sqm having a monthly capacity of 2000 beds since 2005. We are one of the two producers in Istanbul.

On products and their specifications

We targeted to mid and upper level of customers except top of the market. Spring and bonnel type of mattresses account most of our portfolio besides foam beds. We produce 11 different kinds of beds. Top level of our product is sold under Altingumus label. We are trying to develop new varieties. Special Uyum beds are made of hundred percent of natural cotton.  Others are made of polyester and synthetic cotton mixtures.

On distribution channel for your products

We produce mainly for sellers in malls, besides we sell our beds to hotels of three to five starts as well. End users prefer Altinyildiz label products.

On procurement of inputs

Mostly we buy fabrics and other inputs such as felt and springs from domestic sellers who are located at Istanbul, Usak, Bursa and other cities. Sometimes we have made our special fabrics to them.

On new products

We develop three new products for ISMOB fair that is to be held at the end of Jan. 2014. We adjust some of our other products to suit better to the needs of customers. We used better and healthier materials in our other two products. They are made of special fabrics and are softer and healthier. We have also a product made of camel wool. We will exhibit them in the fair.

On exports and export markets

We aimed to domestic market. However, about 25 percent of our production was exported to some countries in Europe, Middle East and Turkish speaking countries. We have customers in Egypt, Palestine, Libya, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan as well.

How was the year 2013 and prospects for the 2014?

Last year was satisfactory for us, when the recession on export markets was taken into account. However, we are optimistic for 2014 because we aimed to increase the number of our distributors. Presently we have only 120. We hope positive results from the fairs. We may find new ways to reduce the cost of logistics and production in order to increase our competitive power in the market.

We also seek new markets and new opportunities for more business both in Turkey and in abroad.

Want to achieve the ideal bedroom for better sleep?

Listen to the advices of Better Sleep Council. They really know everything about better sleep. Here is the professional look:

The first step is purchasing the proper sleep surface and accompaniments.

Mattresses

Having a suitable place to lie down at the end of the day is more important than you may think. Sleeping on a quality mattress that fits you and your sleep habits can help you feel more energized. However, sleeping on a mattress that is old or doesn’t offer you the right amount of comfort and support can lead to health problems like backaches and sleep deprivation.

A poor mattress is one of the leading causes of bad sleep. And even a high-quality mattress should be replaced about every five to seven years. Technology has changed, so if you haven’t shopped for a new one in a while, it’s worth comparing mattress types so that you can choose the best one for you.

Pillows

The variety of pillows may seem overwhelming, but they all serve one purpose: to support your head and neck to keep them level with your shoulders and spine as you sleep. There are many different pillows types on the market today. Your sleep position should dictate what kind of pillow you choose:

* Firm pillows – best if you sleep on your side

* Medium-firm pillows – best if you sleep on your back

* Soft pillows – best if you sleep on your stomach

Sheets

While they may seem unimportant to your sleep experience, the right sheets can lead to better sleep. First, make sure you’re buying sheets that are the right size for your mattress. Sheets that don’t fit your mattress are likely to tear. Next, figure out which kind of sheets are right for you:

* Cotton sheets are very popular. There are many different kinds, including the soft, luxurious Egyptian cotton. 100% cotton sheets are breathable and tend to keep a cool temperature.

* Silk sheets are soft and smooth. They retain heat easily, so they are better used for cooler nights.

* Flannel is warm and great for cool climates and cold weather. Flannel sheets are measured in ounces, with the heavier weights meaning higher quality.

* Synthetics like polyester are often less breathable, but also less expensive.

Once you have found the perfect set of sheets, take care of them. Change and wash your sheets weekly and replace them as they start to appear worn.

Study shows the dangers of driving while sleepy

* The National Sleep Foundation and the Centers for Disease Control warn that drowsy driving is as dangerous as drunk driving.

The National Sleep Foundation and the Centers for Disease Control warn that drowsy driving is as dangerous as drunk driving. Driving after being awake longer than 24 hours is the same as driving with a blood alcohol content higher than the national limit. Despite the dangers, a disturbingly large amount of people still get behind the wheel fatigued. 60 percent of Americans in a study admitted to having driven while sleepy at least once during the past year, while 37 percent admitted to having actually fallen asleep while driving.
The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security reported 3,109 crashes causing injury and 48 fatal crashes due to drowsy driving in Knox County last year. With the risk of permanently changing the lives of another family, as well as facing legal action, it’s disheartening to think that so many people still risk driving while being too tired to safely do so.

Drowsy drivers can also face criminal charges. Last May, a man in Sevier County fell asleep behind the wheel and drifted into the other lane, before waking up and attempting to avoid an accident, said ABC 6. He collided with an oncoming vehicle, injuring the other driver as well as two teenagers in his own car. He received charges for failure to maintain lane, financial responsibility, due care and a child restraint violation.

Volunteers find out how difficult it is to drive while extremely tired

Last August, several Utah volunteers stayed awake for 30 hours to see what it’s like to drive fatigued, according to Deseret News. After driving in a controlled environment, the sleepy drivers reported feeling less responsive as well as difficulty concentrating and reacting to instructions. Many of them repeatedly ran over traffic cones, signifying property damage or injured people.

It’s crucial to pull over immediately if any of these warning signs of drowsiness are noticed:
- Difficulty focusing, and feeling irritable
- Blinking, yawning and heavy eyelids
- Missing turnoffs or signs
- Head “nodding off”
- Drifting out of the lane or hitting the rumble strip

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration warns that most of the alertness tricks said to help drivers stay awake are ineffective. Rather than rely on caffeine or blasting cold air through the window, drivers should get enough sleep before beginning a trip. Upon feeling drowsy, it can help to pull over at a rest stop and take a nap.

Getting help from an attorney

No matter how careful you are while driving, you may likely be sharing the road with negligent or fatigued drivers. If you’ve been in an accident caused by a drowsy driver, you may be eligible for the compensation of your medical expenses. It’s important to contact an experienced personal injury attorney right away to find out about your rights.

Yataksan: A boutique producer of beds

“We are a bedding company and we produce beds,” says Mete Akyurek, a partner of Yataksan, a family business, partnered by three brothers and their parents.

Established in 1977 by founding father Ibrahim Akyurek to produce foam beds, Yataksan is now producing for every group of buyers in the industry, from spring beds to visco beds, from baby beds to hotel mattresses. “Since at the beginning we have been trying to improve the quality of bedrooms both in Turkey and in Europe. I started in this business with our father 36 years ago. There are more producers of mattresses in Turkey more than that were needed.” says Akyurek.

“Earlier we have been producing egg shaped sponge mattresses made of polyurethane materials. They were not healthy though were sold hot. At the beginning of 90’s, spring mattress producers have emerged. Yataksan was among the top ten in those years. Now we have 10 different products of bonnel spring, ten others are made hercules spring. We also produce latex and visco mattresses.”

“We procure all inputs in from domestic sources. We produce with small batches to serve best to our buyers. Our daily production capacity is 150 beds. We can triple it when needed by additional shifts.

We sell our products mostly in Turkey, because prices were down in export markets. Following the crisis in 2008 bedding industry has experienced a serious recession, some has protect their positions. The years 2012 and 2013 were rather good for us. We strengthened our positions with new products and increasing the level of customer satisfaction.

In 2014 we will increase our capacity by 15 to 20 percent. World markets are in still living a recession. The situation in Europe is unknown. Europe and North African markets can be good drives for our industry if we can increase exports to these countries.

Domestic market is like a black box. Customers are becoming more aware of the importance of quality of beds for their sleep and their health.” concluded Mete Akyurek.

This approach to showing the comfort and support a mattress can provide, helps remove customer uncertainty and confusion. Customers are confident they have found the right mattress, which leads to faster decision-making and fewer returns. Following is the brief from REVEAL™ system:

“Our retail clients and manufacturers have found that the REVEAL™ system has helped improve store performance by:

    •  “REVEAL makes up-selling simple for our sales people. Our AUSP has increased by 30% – 50% across all stores. ” -Large Canadian mattress and furniture retailer.
