Better Sleep Council Encourages Consumers to “Get on Top”

Better Sleep Month campaign complements retailer efforts in May by urging consumers to get to the bottom of mattress replacement.

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia – The Better Sleep Council (BSC), the research and education arm of the International Sleep Products Association (ISPA), used new research and social media to urge consumers to “Get on Top” of a new mattress during Better Sleep Month in May.

Timed to complement the communication efforts of mattress retailers leading up to Memorial Day sales, campaign efforts coached consumers through the most common frustrations of mattress replacement. “New Better Sleep Council research shows that consumers put off buying a new mattress even when they know their current mattress is not only old, but actually causes them pain and negatively impacts their sleep quality” said Pete Bils, chair of the Better Sleep Council. “This year’s campaign helps bridge the gap between recognizing the need for replacement and visiting a store to get on top of a new mattress.”

The “Get on Top” campaign will preview new research findings that reveal key pain points in mattress replacement and identify consumers’ core concerns relating to the shopping experience. Shared via BSC’s digital channels and distributed to consumer media outlets prior to Memorial Day, research findings will provide insight about the impact of poor sleep, consumers’ ideas of a perfect mattress, motivations behind purchase decisions and price comparisons, as well as firsthand accounts from prospective buyers about speaking with a mattress sales rep. “We want consumers to feel confident when approaching Memorial Day mattress sales, and we’re starting by addressing their biggest concerns,” said Bils. “The Better Sleep Council is focused on demystifying the mattress shopping experience. Urging consumers to ‘Get on Top’ is the first step toward accomplishing that.” Beginning May 1, a team of 16 brand-neutral bloggers in the mom, lifestyle and beauty spaces began sharing their stories and mattressfocused messages along with new and existing Better Sleep Council social content. Each blogger will publish and promote one Get on Top blog post via Facebook and Twitter. To drive social buzz, the BSC will also be giving away a $1,000 grand prize on its Facebook Page.

“Similar to past Better Sleep Month promotion, we hope our membership will leverage the ‘Get on Top’ campaign to reinforce their own marketing efforts,” said Bils.

Is Sleeping Less Possible?

Sleep deprivation harms health

One third of human’s life is spent in sleep. Is it necessary to sleep this much? Shorter sleep time is rather exceptional. Is it possible to shorten sleep periods?

Those who need more time to work and sleeping more, mostly try to reduce their sleep periods. However, it is not possible to do it beyond a certain limit. Experiments show that too short period of sleeping is harmful for the health. Sleep deprivation badly effects memory and learning capacities and make body more vulnerable to diseases.

According to Prof. Dr. Murat Aksu, president of Turkish Sleep Medicine Association, who emphasizes on the necessity for sleep as well as other human needs such as eating, drinking and breathing, normal periods of sleeping changes between 4 to 11 hours from people to people depending on the genetic factors. The major proof of genetic root is that, twins have the same amount of sleep.

Sleep is a pre-requisite for health

Prof. Dr. Aksu believes that it is not possible to change the sleeping periods meaningfully. He says: “Sleeping is a period of no concession. It is a pre-requisite for being healthy. So, it can not be considered as a wastage of time from the birth to death. During times that we have to shorten it some un-intentional effect are resulted. The most obvious signal of sleep deprivation is the diminishing of memory and learning capacities and being more vulnerable against diseases. In a study made on university students, it was shown that, limiting the sleep period beyond a certain limit is not possible. Subjects have felt themselves tired, lost their concentration and some of their memory power. Subjects have lost their fight against sleepiness and gone into deep sleep. In short, you can not learn well by saving from your sleep period. Sleep is also dispensable for the formation of permanent memory.”

Sleep is a vital need for humans. Prof. Dr. Murat Aksu, says that most of the sleep experiments take 3 to 4 days during that periods they have gone reflexive sleeps.

“Longer the sleepless period, the higher frequency of sleep attacks. At the end of 3 days of experiment, stress, nervousness, unconscious of time, daydreaming, loss of perception are witnessed. At later stages shaking hands, feeling hot, aches and loss of sight may occur.

“The longest sleep experiment by now took 11 days on a university student in America. Following his lost of reality and on signals of psychosis at the eleventh day, the test was ended. Similar test that were done on animals ended with loss of lives at certain periods depending on the kinds of animals.”

75 of Turkish population sleep eight hours

Prof. Aksu, says on this: “Certain names in the history such as Napoleon, Churchill, etc., is known with their very short sleeping periods. However there are a good number of people that are more resistable to sleep deprivation. In Turkey, only 10 percent of people sleep 6 hours or less. Some people sleep 6 hours during weekdays and extend their sleep periods by 8 to 11 hours. About 15 percent of population sleep more than 8 hours.”

If you’re in bed business, it’s the best place to be in September!

Recognized as the UK’s biggest bed exhibition, the National Bed Federation’s (NBF) hugely popular and successful Bed Show is back for a fifth year – and will be bigger and better than ever! Taking place from the 23-24 September 2014, The Bed Show welcomes many well-known bed manufacturers and component suppliers and is a must-see for anyone in the business of buying, selling or specifying beds. All exhibitors are members of the National Bed Federation. Buying from an NBF member provides customers with the reassurance they need that they are in turn offering their customers decent products from decent companies. The format will remain largely the same but for 2014 there will be a third hall. “Our fourth Bed Show was another huge success,” said Jessica Alexander, executive director of the NBF. “Visitor numbers were up by 5% from 2012 which proves that the show is timely and relevant. “Demand to exhibit at the show has grown year-on-year so taking on the additional hall means we’re able to make around 25% more space. This enables us to have more members exhibiting but also accommodate requests for larger stands – however we will be maintaining the current restrictions of 80 sqm per brand up to a maximum of 320 sqm per member organization. We will also be reconfiguring the layout to include additional café/ refreshment areas across the three halls.” Currently only members of the NBF are invited to exhibit at 2014 Bed Show and the show will continue to present its unique mix of both bed manufacturers – all with British manufacturing bases – and component suppliers. Those able to exhibit will also be delighted that the Bed Show will be staying low-cost, thereby sticking to its original ethos.

A major company in production of bed cover exports all of its products

Lokman Ozay was a student in the eighties when he founded his company Ozay Group to export and to contribute in the national economy. Soon he was awarded by Turkish Union of Exporters as the youngest businessmen of the year. He told his story to our magazine Sleep Well:

On Ozay Groups successes

I founded it in 1983 to export and trade of bed covers. Our product portfolio reached up to 52 items soon and become one of the major buyers of towels produced in Bursa. We import curtained bed covers from Germany for the first time in Turkey. In 1986 we started to produce futon beds, known as Japan beds, similar to floor beds used in Anatolia. It is made of % 100 cotton that was layered as 5 cm. of layers. They weigh less than 17 kilogram. Later we began to produce bed cover sets and visco bed bed covers. In 2003 we quit the production of beds.

On brands and products

We use Turkuaz brand in bed covers, Mavi Ay in box spring bases. We have 104 different bed covers made of different materials including bamboo, horse hair, camel hair, wool and fibers, each are for certain season of the year. We even produce covers out of coconut fibers. Being natural they are healthier and comfortable.

On exports

From the very beginning our policy is to export all our products. Our products are delivered to Germany, Belgium, Holland and Austria. Our box spring bed bases are exported to Switzerland, France and Israel. We seek new markets, as well.

On production

We produce in our facilities of 5,500 sqm on a 20 thousand sqm land. We process 8,000 meter of fabrics daily and produce 3,500 bed covers. We produce 75 bed bases daily. Box Spring is movable and have springs beneath. These are delivered to Sweden, France and Holland. Recently to Hungary and Poland.

On fairs and fair activities

We did not miss any fairs in the past. They were all profitable. This year we are going to participate only in Interzum fair, because we utilize our capacity fully. Our connections that we have built in 14 years are bearing their fruits. We may participate in the Sleep Well Expo Istanbul additionally. There must be more fair events in the industry.

Additional comments

About 30 million dollars worth of bed covers is exported from Turkey. This can be increased remarkably. Only Germany and Austria need 8,5 million beds annually. Turkey may become a leading country in the world in bed cover manufacturing if we keep our quality and prices at suitable levels.

Spending its twenty years of business experience for mattress manufacturing, Pofuduk Yatak recorded a growth rate of 47% in 2014.

“Mattress manufacturing is our business” says Resul Ihsan Hamzaoglu, member of the board of Pofuduk Yatak. “The government should support medium-sized companies such as Pofuduk especially in machinery purchases in order to help them to grow. Another board member Tamer Kaynar evaluated 2014 and briefed us about their latest mattresses in an interview.

How do you describe the importance of a mattress as a company manufacturing only mattresses?

We should first say that a mattress is a product related to health. A mattress would be given as a promotion with furniture but it gained momentum in time and now it has a respectful position in stores. People have become more conscious with good presentations. Our main problem is visuality. Many times we have to make long time works. In other words, a mattress has to visually be good and should be comfortable from the standpoint of health. Our only business is to manufacture mattresses and we continue our work by giving first priority to human health and visual quality. We manage to do the same work of big companies do in integrated plants at our small size scales.

Government should support providing machinery

Small and medium size companies as our company should get benefit of state investments. We have problems at this sense. The most important one of these incentives is support for machinery. We used our own capital when we established this company. We export productS which we developed with our own capital. Big companies get state support at this regard but we cannot get any benefit. We want to get the same support. This will increase production and exports. The state support is, of course, is not enough. The government should inspect after the support to check if the companies are using the incentive with the right way. Under the counter production, the biggest trouble of the sector, cause problems for the manufacturers. They print features such as bamboo, anti-stress, etc. but when you have a closer look, you see that there is not any quality feature.

How was 2014 for your company? Can you mention your 2015 targets?

We realized a growth rate of 47% in 2014, representing a higher growth than our plans. We are targeting to provide same growth in 2015 too. We intend to travel all over the world. I hope the government supports us for further growth. If we invest our capital in machinery it would be difficult for us grow in production and export.

Exports

We started exporting this year. We export 30% of our production. We produced a new product namely “Roll Pack” which gets rid of freight problem in exports. We ship 300 mattresses instead of 100. We are now exporting to Kenya, Angola, Nigeria, Libya, Northern Iraq and Kazakhstan.

Ali Izmirlioglu, general manager of Uyku Dunyasi says, “We aimed to be in top five”.

Selling in 125 points in Turkey, Uyku Dunyasi is raising its targets in export markets. Mr. Izmirlioglu informed about his company

Right mattress for better sleep

Quality of sleep depends on the quality of bed. A good bed helps to protect natural form of spine while others may cause back pains by pressing on veins nerves. We try to produce healthy products to remove sleep problems.

On production and exports

In our factory of 6 thousand sqm we produce mattresses that are sold in 125 stores in Turkey and exported to several countries including France, Belgium, Canada and America. Employing 50 people, we try to offer the better quality and services than our competitors to our buyers. Materials and machinery are always improving in mattress industry, so this forces us to invest in them.

On importance of springs for beds

Spring is one of the most important parts of the comfort of a bed. Steel and systems preferred in the springs used in beds are directly related with quality of end product. As Uyku Dunyasi, we have been using a special spring system with their comfort, hardness, design and support. We use bonnell springs and pocket springs, because they have some advantages over other kinds. They contains more element per sqm, so they are orthopedic. It has tree fold higher collapse strength. Springs can move independently so the bed gets the form of the body. Support power may be adjusted by using pocket springs. Since they are packed in pockets they are more hygienic. Multizone beds are possible by using different springs. They make no noise.

On bed industry’s progress

We observe that promotional activities for furniture industry gains momentum with an aim to get more share from export markets. More brands are needed to feed the long lasting efforts of companies. We hope that, in 2015 the industry and companies will be more profitable. About 70 countries are active in furniture trade in the world. The biggest exporters are China, Germany, Italy and Poland. Branding is a must for further development.

One of the oldest companies in the field, Polya Foreign Trade company will produce 6,000 bed covers daily, top in Europe, in 2015. Temel Cetkin, general manager of Yaysan, introduced his company.

On products of Polya company

It was established by Tomsire Cetkin in 1987 and had been producing beds of spring and foam types by 2000. Then it focused on the production of bed covers, by securing a great amount of order from a German company. Now our company expands its buyers in Germany. Besides, we produce 150 beds daily for domestic market under Polya brand name.

On investments

We employ about 300 people in our factory of 12 thousand sqm where we produces bed covers on about 170 machinery for quilt, zipping and industrial sewing. Some of them are automatic. We have a daily capacity of 3 thousand pieces of bed covers. Next year it will be doubled. Our headquarter is in Istanbul, other functions including manufacturing and logistics have been carried out in the factory in Tavsanli, Kutahya.

On basic product, bed covers

The line seems to be a simple production. However, number of factors is important, including the quality of fabrics, zippers and fibers. They have to be combined accordingly. Productivity and efficiency in manufacturing operations are also important. Human factor and faults are another field for focusing on. We have successfully been preferred by buyers in Germany.

On export markets

In our field, Germany, Austria and Poland are major countries. Poland has the lion’s share. Estimates show that in these three countries about 1.5 million pieces of bed covers is produced annually. Our share is about 10%. 90% of our production goes to exports. We also export to Switzerland, Belgium, France, Holland, Island, Finland and Sweden. In 2014 we sold about half million pieces in export markets. The volume will be higher when our operations an new factory gained momentum.

On developing automation of machinery

In some cases standard machinery would not suit best to our processes. In these cases we seek better ways to do our work. By visiting fairs and exhibitions our experts find and develop solutions for productivity and quality of the work.

On mattress production

We produce mattresses made of bonnell and pocked springs in our factory besides latex and visco kinds. We use bed covers that we produce. Beds are mainly sold in domestic market. Some of our oldest buyers in export markets are also demanding beds from us. Sales of beds and pillows depend on the cultural and aesthetic choices of customers. In Turkey, people prefer harder beds, while Europeans sleeps on softer beds. Recent reports on the outlook of bed industry in the world point out that Turkish people replace their furniture more than their beds. Younger generations seem to change the sleep culture.
