Quality over quantity: golden anniversary edition of Heimtextil sets the themes for the new furnishing season

  • Sleep product displays have been increasing every year and events about sleep technology come forward.

 

  • With a content-driven program, the 50th edition of Heimtextil delivered strong impetus for the start of the new furnishing season. Sustainability was placed firmly at top of the agenda, outshining all other topics. 63,000 visitors gathered information about the major themes dominating the international industry from 2,952 exhibitors at the world’s leading trade fair for home and contract textiles. As expected, the unusually early date led to a drop in visitor numbers.

‘The industry is currently facing huge challenges. And some of those taking part at Heimtextil have really felt this. However: exhibitor satisfaction has remained at the same high levels as last year. And visitor satisfaction has even increased from 93 to 95 per cent. In addition to the early date, the reasons behind the reduced visitor numbers are mainly down to strong consolidation of specialist shops and developments in the stationary retail trade in the direction of e-commerce. The trend has also experienced an economic slowdown’, explains Detlef Braun, CEO of Messe Frankfurt. ‘This is in line with the fact that as many as 34 per cent of our exhibitors rate the current economic situation in the sector as poor, compared with just 18 per cent the year before’.

 

Industry-focused content in line with the times

The anniversary edition of Heimtextil offered the richest event program in its history: over 150 lectures and panel discussions, 30 guided tours of the trade fair and numerous other program events supplied inspiration in relation to the most exciting new products and encouraged exchanges between representatives of industry and trade, design, interior architecture and hospitality. Above all, the highly frequented ‘Trend Space’ with its unique trend showcase provided important industry content that was absolutely in line with the times. ‘Inquisitive traders who make a difference in the market and keep up with the times are gathering inspiration for the new season here in Frankfurt. As the world’s biggest trade fair, Heimtextil is of existential importance for our industry. No other trade fair offers such a wealth of information’, says Ottmar Ihling, spokesman for the DecoTeam and draws a positive conclusion for the Association of German Home Textile Suppliers in hall 8.0.

‘We had a great number of visitors to the DecoTeam with good and high-quality customers and delegations from large companies.’

Peter Gumbel, General Manager of Aro Artlaender, also draws a positive conclusion about their presence in hall 11.0 and illustrates how the visitor structure at Heimtextil has changed to incorporate more international buyers: ‘All the customers we expected to be there were there. Although the German specialist trade was somewhat lacking, as far as exports are concerned, it was a very good fair. Compared to 15 years ago, buyer delegations have certainly become a little smaller, but the decision-makers are still at Heimtextil – they may spend a little less time here, but they have very concrete plans.’

 

All roads lead to sustainability

For the first time, the United Nations Office for Partnerships presented the worldwide ‘Sustainable Development Goals’ at Heimtextil and invited industry participants to take part in an intensive dialogue. ‘Heimtextil was the next step on our tour to present the Sustainable Development Goals in collaboration with Messe Frankfurt´s Texpertise Network and the Conscious Fashion Campaign. The United Nations Office for Partnerships welcomes and appreciates the innovative work of the exhibitors and the variety of sustainable textiles presented in Frankfurt. The feedback on our booth and talks was extraordinary. Together with Messe Frankfurt and the Conscious Fashion Campaign, UNOP welcomes the opportunity to reach a broad and professional audiences, raise awareness of the goals and galvanize support”, says Lucie Brigham, Chief of Office at UNOP and guest of honor at the Heimtextil opening press conference.

 

Whether start-up or traditional company, no manufacturer will be able to avoid environmentally friendly materials and production processes in 2020. Even big names are placing value on textiles made of certified materials and avoiding plastic packaging.

 

Know-how for architecture, hospitality and sleep experts

As another top theme, Heimtextil focused on the furnishing of hotels and public buildings. Around 370 companies specializing in contract business and the new ‘Interior.Architecture.Hospitality Library’ illustrated the diverse properties of functional textiles and provided interior designers and hospitality experts in particular with new solutions.

 

An even greater reception was enjoyed by the ‘Sleep! The Future Forum’, with which Heimtextil provided concentrated know-how on all aspects of sleeping and exciting product innovations in the fields of sleeping systems, bedding and bed linen. Here, too, experts dealt with the question of the challenges manufacturers face if they want to operate and produce sustainably. The panel discussion ‘Securing the future of the next generations – sustainable strategies for manufacturers and retailers’ was one of the highlights of the four-day program. It presented practical examples from Lenzing, Vossen and IKEA and introduced the new state-run ‘Grüner Knopf’ textile seal and the global Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations to the interested trade audience.

 

The next Heimtextil will take place from 12-15 January 2021.

The trade wars between the US and China affect the mattress industry as well as other sectors. The US, which has reduced imports from Chinese firms, has become open to export opportunities for new countries. Considering this as an opportunity, Turkish companies accelerated their efforts.

One of Turkey’s major brands in mattress exports, Ersan Madeni Esya interprets this situation from the standpoint of Turkey. The exclusive interview we made with Mazhar Kilic, Foreign Trade Specialist of Ersan Madeni Esya, is as follows:

How do you interpret the impact of trade wars between China and the US in the sleep products market? How do you think the Turkish mattress industry is affected by this situation?

Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) warns that the World economy will be badly affected after deepening of the trade wars between USA and China and also revalidation of protectionist economic measures. Turkey will be one of those countries that might be affected badly. Stepping back from free trade to 1990’s custom tariff rates will lead to decrease in standard of living by 14% said OECD, and this will surely be a hit on the mattress sector too. Considering that mattress consumption is 45% by householders and 55% by hospitals, hotels and other profit seeking organizations.  The reciprocal manipulations between the two countries are affecting the public investments, national income, public expenses in a bad manner. Any decrease in the demand of the houses in the real estate sector will cut down the demand of the fundamental furniture needs like mattress. An average households is changing their mattress once in 8-9 years while this numbers go down to 5-6 years in hotels, hospitals. Any bad effects on their economy due to the trade wars will delay the needs of changing their mattress or trying a new and functional one for about 1-2 years. Also, lowering the standard of livings will lead to no response to those creative and innovative ideas by the consumers. We are seeing the rise in the eco-friendly natural mattresses that address all types of needs of customers like health, comfort. As turkey, we are exporting over European and Middle Eastern Countries and importing from China and Poland the most.  We can draw a conclusion at this point that putting too much taxes, tariffs and additional duties and protectionist measures in the import and export activities will make the World economy and import-export activities of countries worse and worse and badly affect the emerging economies like Turkey.

What are the precautions to take in Turkey’s import-export issues? 

It is highly important to make a good planning in export and import activities for those countries that target for steady and sustainable growth in their economy. The most decisive factor in development of the emerging economies like Turkey is the rise in export rate. In this context, our country has to focus on the following issues for a more productive export strategies, investment in technology and science, innovation, focus on research – development and entrepreneurship, easy access to true information and market insights, strengthening the structures of transportation and logistics, focused on the exportation of value added and high level of technological goods, improving the supplying of the domestic raw material to enhance the added values of the export, improving the current market shares, improving the market shares of  high potential of growth in targeted markets,  finding immediate solutions for the structural problems that our exporters face in the global commerce world that continuously change and turning the threats into opportunities, keep an eye on the opportunities in the market and get profits out of it quickly, pushing our entrepreneurs to the new lands with market diversification, regarding the subjects of foreign trade we should take advantages of the geopolitical location of our country and pulling the investors in our country.

Which country do you export most as a company? Which factors do you think play a role in these countries choosing a Turkish company?

We are exporting mainly to Nederland and Germany in Europe, African countries, Middle Eastern countries, the USA and Canada and other 24 countries in total.  We can say that the customers in those areas consider the following advantageous sides of our country to do trade with; geopolitical location of Turkish lands, opportunities of transportation varieties, infrastructural and logistical advantages. Leading time is very short in comparison with the Far East and other areas additionally, the prestige and reputation of our city, Kayseri in producing the most exported mattresses in Turkey also where we make our production plays an important role for our export activities.

Amerika ve Çin arasındaki ticaret savaşları diğer sektörleri olduğu gibi yatak sektörünü de etkiliyor. Çinli firmalardan ithalatı azaltan Amerika, yeni ülkeler için ihracat fırsatına dönüştü. Bunu bir fırsat olarak değerlendiren Türk firmalar çalışmalarını hızlandırdı.

Yatak ihracatında Türkiye’nin önemli firmalarından olan Ersan Madeni Eşya, Türkiye açısından bu durumu yorumladı. Firma’nın dış ticaret sorumlusu Mazhar Kılıç ile konu hakkında özel bir röportaj yaptık.

Çin ve ABD arasında yaşanan ticaret savaşlarının yatak sanayisine olan etkisini nasıl yorumluyorsunuz? Türk yatak yan sanayisi bu durumdan sizce nasıl etkileniyor?

Ekonomik Kalkınma ve İşbirliği Örgütü (OECD) ABD ile Çin arasındaki ticaret savaşlarının derinleşmesi ve korumacı ekonomik önlemlerin yeniden oluşması sonrasında Dünya ekonomisinin olumsuz yönde etkileneceği konusunda uyarılarda bulundu. Türkiye, bu durumdan kötü etkilenebilecek ülkelerden biri olacak. OECD’ye göre Serbest Ticaret uygulamasından, 90’ların özel vergi oranlarına geri dönüş yaşam standartlarının %14’lere kadar düşmesine neden olacak. Yatak tüketiminin bireysel evler tarafından% 45, hastaneler, oteller ve diğer kar amaçlı kuruluşlar tarafından da % 55’e kadar kullanıldığı göz önünde bulunduruluyor. Çin ve Amerika arasındaki karşılıklı manipülasyonlar, kamu yatırımlarını, milli geliri ve kamu harcamalarını kötü yönde etkiliyor. Emlak sektöründe evlerin talebinde yaşanacak herhangi düşüşler, yataklar gibi temel mobilya ihtiyaçlarındaki talebi de azaltıyor. Bir evde ortalama 8-9 yılda bir yatak değiştirilirken bu oran otel ve hastanelerde 5-6 yıla kadar düşüyor. Ticaret savaşlarının olumsuz etkileri, yatak değiştirme ihtiyaçlarını değiştirecek ya da yeni ve işlevsel olanı 1-2 yıllık denemelerini sağlayacaktır. Ayrıca yaşam standartlarının düşmesi tüketicilerin yenilikçi fikirlerine yanıt vermeyecektir. Sağlık ve konfor gibi müşterilerin çeşitli ihtiyaçlarına yanıt veren doğa dostu, doğal yataklarda artış gözlemliyoruz. Türkiye olarak Avrupa ve Orta Doğu ülkelerine ihracat yapıyor, Çin ve Polonya’dan ithalat gerçekleştiriyoruz.  Bu noktada, ihracat ve ithalatta daha fazla vergi, gümrük vergisi ve ek yaptırımlar uygulanmasının Türkiye gibi gelişen ülkelerin ekonomisine zarar vereceği yargısına ulaşabiliriz.

Türkiye’nin ithalat-ihracat konularında alması gereken önlemler sizce nelerdir?

İstikrarlı ve sürdürülebilir büyümeyi hedefleyen ülkeler için ithalat ve ihracat konularında iyi bir planlama yapmaları oldukça önemlidir. Türkiye gibi gelişmekte olan ülkelerin gelişmelerindeki en önemli etken, ihracat oranlarındaki artıştır. Bu bağlamda ülkemiz, daha verimli ihracat stratejileri, için aşağıdaki maddelere odaklanmak zorundadır:

Teknoloji ve bilime yatırım, inovasyon, araştırma geliştirme ve girişimcilik konularına odaklanma, doğru bilgi ve pazar araştırmalarına kolay erişim, ulaşım ve lojistik yapılarının güçlendirilmesi, ihracatta katma değer için yerli ham maddeye erişimin güçlendirilmesi, mevcut pazar payının genişlemesi, yüksek potansiyel görülen ve hedeflenen pazardaki payın geliştirilmesi, ihracatçılarımızın sıkça değişen ve tehditlerin fırsatlara döndüğü küresel ticaret dünyasında yapısal sorunsal için acil çözümler bulması,  pazardaki fırsatlara göz dikilmesi ve bunlardan hızlıca kâr elde edilmesi, girişimcilerimizin pazar çeşitliliği ile birlikte yeni kıtalara yönlendirilmesidir.

Dış ticaret konusunda ülkemizin jeopolitik konumundan faydalanmalı, yatırımcıları ülkemize çekmeliyiz.

En çok hangi ülkeye ihracat yapıyorsunuz? Bu ülkelerin bir Türk firmasını seçmesinde hangi faktörlerin rol oynadığını düşünüyorsunuz?

Esas olarak; Avrupa’da Hollanda ve Almanya, Afrika ülkeleri, Orta Doğu Ülkeleri, Kanada ve diğer 24 ülkeye ihracat yapıyoruz. Bu bölgelerdeki müşterilerin bizimle ticaret yapmak için şu avantajları takip ettiğini şöyle sıralayabilirim; Türkiye topraklarının jeopolitik konumu, ulaşım seçeneği imkânları, altyapı ve lojistik avantajlar. Sevk süresi, Uzak Doğu ve diğer ülkelere kıyasla çok kısadır. Ayrıca ülkemizin en çok yatak ihraç eden şehri olan Kayseri’mizin itibarı, ihracat aktivitelerimizde önemli rol oynar.

New role for the home as a filter between the indoors and outdoors

Everything seems different this year. In every community around the globe, our lifestyles are being put to the test, called into question and adapted in the face of the pandemic. The interiors sector is one area of the economy that’s used to responding to changes in consumer behavior. “It’s important that this ability to adapt is backed up by a versatile trade fair layout. Trade fairs have a vital role to play in their function as marketplaces and catalysts – particularly in the current situation,” states Matthias Pollmann, Vice President Trade Fair Management, whose responsibilities include the topic areas of furniture, interior decoration and design at Koelnmesse. “A trade fair like the Interior Business Event, imm cologne, is always evolving. In recent years, it has been continuously adapted to market requirements that have been changing more and more rapidly. In our strategic planning, we’ve already anticipated much of what will now be required. This will now start to pay off.” And, although nobody could have reckoned with events moving so quickly, Pollmann believes that the trade fair is in a strong position: “We have a vision for imm cologne that will raise its role as a source of inspiration and platform for innovation to a new level – and we now want to pursue this vision with a clear focus and see 2021 as the year it will be put into practice. I think our timing is spot on,” concludes Pollmann, with an eye to the challenges facing the industry.

New perspectives on the future of home living

What does it mean for the way we live when intensive use of digital media, the overlapping of our professional and private lives and the desire for a safe haven and a place to experience nature all come together within our comfort zones? In the future, the quality of our living environments will be defined not only by the way the rooms are laid out and furnished, but also by the transitions between the indoors and the outdoors. Architecture and interior design experiment with open facades, loft-like concepts and items of furniture that take on space-management functions. Wi-Fi and connectivity are just as much a part of modern living as comfortably appointed balconies or gardens, home offices and spaces designed for socializing.

Trends like these are also changing the trade fair landscape. At the Interior Business Event, imm cologne, for instance, a purpose-built hall will make room for the sector’s growing connectivity. “As a trade fair that embraces all aspects of interior design, we’re experiencing growing interest in the home as a common interface even for industries that are traditionally far removed from the home-living sector,” says Matthias Pollmann. As he goes on to explain, with a view to the economic challenges in the wake of the coronavirus crisis: “We want to reflect the entire world of home furnishings and have to take a proactive approach to addressing current developments in order to support our exhibitors as they start a new chapter. After all, trends aren’t just about new colors – they’re about business.”

What are the three key trends that will play a role in this changing world?

1. The home as a hub

The infrastructure inside (think connectivity) and outside our homes is becoming ever more important. Our digitally managed energy supplies are being complemented by autonomous units like pellet heating and solar energy – important issues for smart homes. However, the increasing role of logistics in domestic arrangements will also call for a high degree of compatibility when it comes to service rooms and docking stations in apartment buildings and private houses.

But above all, the home office is set to become a permanent feature of the way many homes are laid out. With video calling and videoconferencing for business, the demands on our domestic surroundings in terms of design are also growing. Who wants to be forever exhibiting their bedroom or playing children in the background when they’re on a call with colleagues? Not only will home offices have to satisfy ergonomic requirements, they’ll also need to meet certain standards with regard to professional appearance and communications. Paint manufacturers are already promoting special colour schemes for home offices. Wallpapers as cool wall coverings, room dividers, special-edition designer desks, screens and acoustic panels to separate workspaces from private areas of the home will make the selection of products for this growing range far more attractive to private individuals than it has been up to now.

2. Hospitality as a second home

Normally, trends from the world of work are adapted in the design of products for private end customers and for use in the home. However, the trend towards a cozy atmosphere, which has become established in recent years in hotels, restaurants and the events sector through the idea of German “Gemütlichkeit” and Danish “hygge”, is now set to intensify. Hospitality design will be tailored towards coziness and use original, “authentic” concepts to attract customers, cool locations will become just as important as food or music, and the “be our guest” motto will be rigorously practiced. Decoration is no longer taboo. Professional interior design is becoming the norm and reflecting the interior looks that have been adopted in private homes.

Long- and short-stay apartments represent a new segment for the interiors business. Brands from the office sector offer lines for private consumers that are more substantial and homely than conventional office furniture. At the same time, we’re discovering the opportunities that office and hotel living offer for the implementation of flexible working time models, training and Work 3.0. Executives, commuters, career starters, trainees, interns and students have very different requirements when it comes to managed urban living concepts.

“The hospitality market is changing. New models are emerging for people who are flexible in terms of time and location and who are open to living concepts such as apartment buildings and co-living projects. It’s important to create new offers for them,” says Dick Spierenburg, Creative Director of imm cologne, who anticipates good prospects for this product segment. “At imm cologne 2021, a special edition of our design event Das Haus will also create an experimental platform for innovative concepts like these in order to pick up on the important new ideas stimulating the industry.”

3. Outdoor living is becoming a basic need for nature lovers and city dwellers

The trend for outdoor living has transformed the furniture market. The “second living room” has been growing in importance over the last couple of years. It doesn’t matter whether you have a large garden or a small rented flat: balconies, patios and gardens are being revitalized and upgraded to become fully fledged living areas with high-quality outdoor furnishings, intelligent furniture concepts, water-repellent fabrics and suitable lighting solutions.

“Is it meant to be used indoors or out?” This is our almost instinctive response when faced with this new garden and patio furniture. Wood, metal, wickerwork and plastic; cotton or PVC; stone, concrete or composite materials – it’s hard to distinguish by sight alone, neither from surface texture nor the aesthetics of their workmanship. That’s because the design of these items is no longer based on typical patio furniture, but rather on what we have in our living rooms. The main thing is to be stylish. The two types of living space influence each other – and they sometimes even swap furnishings.

Overall, the future of modern home living will be characterized by open floor plans, transparency between exteriors and interiors and an awareness of the social importance of the way our living environments look. We keep an eye on trends, seek out a style of our own and exchange ideas through social media. Kilim Furniture: “We successfully managed the pandemic period and we work to realize our goals”

Kilim Furniture, one of the leader furniture brands of Turkey, quoted that they quickly taken measures and orientated theirselves. Cihat Şahin, General Manager of Kilim Furniture stated that they received support during the pandemic from the umbrella organizations of the sector in which they were members.

Emphasizing that all habits have changed, Şahin stated that the covid-19 epidemic caused to economic stagnation, but both production and sales will reach the old figures with the normalization process.

What was the biggest challenge you faced in your work life these days when the virus changed the flow of life?

COVID-19 pandemic caused dramatic changes in people’s lives and social life. People have quit the pursuits that make them feel good about themselves, suspended their plans for the future. They quickly changed their purchasing reflexes and developed a more economical attitude by not spending on anything other than basic consumer goods such as food and hygiene. So, if you can’t go outside, for example, buying a new outfit doesn’t appear to be very meaningful act. These are small but remarkable examples for understanding the situation, that’s why I cite them. In total, there was a big change in purchasing reflexes and buying channels, swiftly. What happened especially on the sales side in more costly product groups such as furniture? The pandemic caused plans to move, marry, and renovate homes to be delayed, the market to stagnate and the cash flow to decline. Structures like us, which are large and financially powerful, have been able to manage this process. Although capacity utilization in our factories has decreased, production continues per the social distancing rules and based on working alternately within the framework of COVID-19 fighting measures.
From the first moment that the outbreak has affected Turkey, we have not experienced adverse, sad situations as a result of the measures we have taken in our factories, our dealers and our headquarters. We are preparing for the new normal with the way we work that prioritizes ‘health and safety’. What we experienced was ‘anxiety’ rather than difficulty. We are a huge family with our employees, stakeholders, customers and the health and safety of each of them are very important to us.

Have you been able to reorganize your business in terms of production, logistics and distribution?
As Kilim Furniture, we always attach importance to issues of quality, fast and reliable delivery. We deliver products to our customers and install these products per the rules of hygiene and social distance, with the necessary masks, protective clothing and gloves. Besides, we periodically disinfect our production center, goods shipment areas and sections and vehicles. At this point, we have taken measures at the maximum level, and we will not abandon these measures during the new normalization process. We also carry out our work in our after-sales service in a way that will never victimize our customers. In short, we aimed to make this challenging process as easy as possible for our customers and we continue our work in this direction unabated.

How do you evaluate the role of the unions you are a member of in this process? Which institutions have supported you most during this difficult period?

Kayseri Chamber of Industry and all other bodies, especially the Mediterranean Exporters’ Association and the Federation of Furniture Associations, of which we are a member, have carried out very successful process management in our opinion. By analyzing the damage that the epidemic would wreak on the sector, they initiated several incentives and measures to be taken by the government to keep the sector afloat and protect the employment. From this point of view, their reflex towards this global crisis was extremely good. Such crises have once again shown how important it is to organize sectors under non-governmental organizations. Acting together does not only compose a sense of solidarity and facilitate business processes, but it is also encouraging and promising for the next steps.

During the pandemic, interest in hospital beds increased. Do you have production in this area or any plan to produce?

20 thousand beds are produced every day in Turkey, and Kayseri is the epicenter of 10 thousand of these. And Kilim Furniture is one of Turkey’s major bed manufacturers. 10 percent of the beds produced under the Kilim Sleep Group were sold to the US, Iraq and Syria market before the pandemic. We have another brand under the name of Yay-sün and a sponge-heavy production is taking place there. Therefore, on this side, we are very rich in terms of infrastructure, hardware and product diversity. As Kilim, we do important work with hotels and hospitals both in Turkey and abroad. We are increasing our diversity of beds to be health-oriented in line with people’s needs. Our recently released BioMedical and EnergyPlus beds emerged after a long R&D process, and the active ingredients in their fabrics prevent pain, spasm and sweating. Our beds, which are suitable for the orthopedic structure of the body and also provide extra comfort and health with special covering and fillings, are preferred because of all these features. We will be releasing four new beds soon, we have completed our work here, and we have come to the stage of production.

Has there been any change in your projects and objectives? (Fairs, change in your export activities, your search for solutions…)

Pandemic significantly changed the projections and planning of all companies and sectors at the beginning of the year. We have not suspended our 2020 investment plans but we have made some arrangements and changed the dates. We will proceed more cautiously. We were planning to add new ones to our stores abroad, but the pandemic has completely changed our calendars. It is not up to us alone to set new dates, but it is to be reshaped by the decision and policies of easing in those countries. Likewise, our domestic store openings will also be within the framework of the determined rules. I hope everything goes as planned and we will complete our planning in the second half period to a great extent. Our exports continue in a non-contact manner, as per the rules announced by the Ministry of Commerce. Of course, it continues in open markets; the U.S was one of our most important markets, but due to the measures taken, the activity there has stopped for some time. As America gradually implements its easing decisions, the work will continue there according to the new normal. With the normalization decisions taken by the countries, the export side will also be mobilized again. Besides, we, as a company, attach great importance to both domestic and international fairs. As the rules of how and in what way the fairs will be held in the next period begin to become clear, we will reevaluate the organizations with a certain date.

Are there any messages you want to convey?

COVID-19 pandemic, which affected the world and led to the implementation of strict quarantine and protectionism policies, was an unpredictable event. With the outbreak, we have entered an unusual period that not only us but no one expected. We hope the outbreak ends as soon as possible. The last few weeks have raised our hopes and we can say that we have started to breathe as the normalization process has gained momentum. Our priority for 2020 is to protect our employment, to maintain the dynamic structure of our overseas markets and stores, to organize the stores we plan to open domestically per the post-COVID-19 situation, to contribute to employment with our new stores, and to make the delivery of the foreign projects we have received.

Proyat’s company official shared the direction of their works during the pandemic period.

What is the biggest challenge you have been facing these days?

Along with the outbreak of the virus in our country, being unable to predict when this process will end, has prompted our production rate to stagnate.

Have you been re-organized for working in terms of production, logistics and distribution?

We applied 2-week break in line with the measures for the pandemic. Then we were reorganized our production plans and started to continue our production by taking maximum precautions.

During the pandemic period, interest in hospital beds increased. Do you have production in this area or do you plan to manufacture?

As Proyat, we do not have a plan any time soon, but we have not received a request. Still, we can focus on the issue if such a demand is received.

Are there any changes in pre-programmed projects and objectives, such as fairs, export operations, solutions, etc.?

In MODEKO International Izmir Furniture Fair, which we attended in recent months, we met with great interest in new models in front of our customers. We continue our production rapidly without changing the production plan we decided before the outbreak and shrinking in employment.

Is there any message you would like to highlight?

As the Proyat family, it is our wish to continue our lives by following the precautions taken without any new fluctuation in the normalization process during this epidemic in the world and in our country.

Salgın önlemlerine yönelik olarak üretimimize 2 haftalık ara verdik. Bu sürenin ardından hızlıca üretim planlarımızı tekrar organize ederek maksimum önlemler çevresinde üretimimize devam etmeye başladık.

Pandemi sürecinde hastane yataklarına ilgi arttı. Bu alanda üretiminiz var mı ya da üretim yapmayı planlıyor musunuz?

Proyat olarak yakın zamanda hastane yatakları projemiz bulunmuyor. Talep olması durumunda konu üzerine yoğunlaşıp gerekli çalışmaları başlatabiliriz.

Projelerinizde ve hedeflerinizde herhangi bir değişiklik oldu mu? (Fuarlar, ihracat çalışmalarınızdaki değişim, çözüm arayışlarınız…)

Geçtiğimiz aylarda katılımcısı da olduğumuz Uluslararası İzmir Mobilya Fuarı MODEKO’ da yeni modellerimizi müşterilerimizle buluşturduk. Bu fuarda güzel bir ilgiyle karşılandık ve fuardan mutlu döndük. Salgın çıkmadan kararlaştırdığımız üretim planımızı bozmadan ve istihdamda küçülmeye gitmeden üretimimize hızla devam ediyoruz.

Aktarmak istediğiniz herhangi bir mesaj var mı?

Proyat ailesi olarak temennimiz, vaka sayısının azalmaya başladığı bu günlerde alınan tedbirlere uyarak normalleşme süreci içerisinde olmamız. Tüm dünyada ve ülkemizde yaşanan bu salgının etkisini kaybetmesiyle haytalarımıza eskisi gibi devam ederek sağlıklı üretim yapmayı umut ediyoruz.

Serabed quickly adapted to changing conditions, increasing its power in digital environment

Serabed, one of the İzmir-based mattress manufacturers, explained to Sleep Well its work in the covid-19 outbreak process. Firm’s Foreign Trade Official Emrah Akar explained how they managed the crisis that occurred with the outbreak.

Akar, pointing out that the habits that changed with the epidemic were also in the commercial life, explained they rearranged the supply chain. Adding that they adapt rapidly to changing conditions and increase their presence in digital environment as Serabed, Akar also emphasizes how important it is to manage this process in a healthy way.

What was the biggest challenge in your business life these days when the virus changed the flow of life?

It will be more accurate to understand this issue by dividing this question into 2 parts.

1- Commercially: We had to program the procurement and logistics processes from the very beginning, since the raw material supply chain, which our entire production process is organically linked to, has deteriorated. Programming of this process brought with it a very painful process. Because some of the raw material suppliers that we are familiar with purchasing either stopped working or switched to short working order, the product could not be supplied in the periods we demanded. This situation caused almost twice the work and process planning intensity and the same stressful period.

2- In terms of human health: As the furniture production sector is a labor-intensive sector, it was a period when we and our employees were concerned about transmitting the virus. In fact, we still continue to experience this process. Of course, this process works in a similar way all over the world, but this period basically pushes every individual of working age rightly to a worried process, negatively affecting psychologically. It is quite clear that the negative impact of this situation on work motivation has become continuous. By accepting that a new period has been entered on a global scale in the next period, we will act with the awareness that the work and social order should be shaped accordingly and redesign our organization accordingly.

Could you reorganize your business in terms of production, logistics and distribution?

There was no sharp break in production and sales departments specifically for our own organization. During periods of intense worries about pandemic, we maintained our work by taking a few days off. As the customer profile evolves from the store customer to the customer who makes internet shopping, we can say that the production and sales towards digital market places increased. In this regard, we were able to adapt our organization to the current operation with minor revisions.

How do you evaluate the role of the troops you are a member of in this process? Which institutions did you have with you most in this challenging process?

In general, we have not come across any expectations regarding the support of any stakeholder while circumventing this process. On the other hand, Torbalı Chamber of Commerce to which we are affiliated took very fast actions during the curfew. He helped by organizing the permissions related to our work and opening the way for us.

During the pandemic process, interest in hospital beds increased. Do you have production in this area or do you plan to produce?

There is no production line for hospital beds and medical groups in our existing production groups. There is no operation for this production group in our short and medium term plans.

Have there been any changes in your projects and goals? (Fairs, changes in your export activities, your search for solutions…)

The instruments such as fairs and export, mentioned in our current operation, are already on the main plan. Of course, in addition to these, various studies and improvements regarding the increase of our awareness in digital market places and the increase of our market share are among our main goals.

Are there any messages you want to give?

What we all observe and realize more clearly in this process is that the only element in human life is human health. It is quite obvious that we need to put a new understanding of consciousness in the center of our lives that will live without forgetting this and protect ourselves and those around us and then the health of all individuals and future generations in the world.

İzmir merkezli yatak üreticilerinden Serabed covid-19 salgını sürecindeki çalışmalarını Sleep Well’e anlattı. Firmanın Dış Ticaret Yetkilisi Emrah Akar salgınla birlikte oluşan krizi nasıl yönettiklerini açıkladı.

Salgın ile birlikte değişen alışkanlıkların ticari hayatta da iz düşümleri olduğuna dikkat çeken Akar, tedarik zincirini yeniden düzenlediklerini ifade etti. Değişen koşullara hızla uyum sağladıklarını, Serabed olarak dijital ortamda da varlıklarını arttıracaklarını ekleyen Akar, röportajda bu süreci sağlıklı bir şekilde yönetmenin ne kadar önemli olduğunu da vurguluyor.

Virüsün hayatın akışını değiştirdiği bu günlerde iş hayatınızda karşılaştığınız en büyük zorluk ne oldu?

Bu soruyu 2 kısma ayırarak cevap vermek konunun anlaşılması bakımından daha isabetli olacaktır.

1- Ticari yönden: Tüm üretim sürecimizin organik şekilde bağlı olduğu ham madde tedarik zinciri bozulduğu için alım ve lojistik süreçlerini en baştan programlamak zorunda kaldık. Bu sürecin programlanması oldukça sancılı bir süreci de beraberinde getirdi. Çünkü alım yapmaya aşina olduğumuz ham madde tedarikçilerinin bir kısmı ya çalışmayı durdurdu ya da kısa çalışma düzenine geçtiği için talep ettiğimiz sürelerde ürün temini gerçekleştirilemedi. Bu durum da neredeyse eski düzenin iki katı kadar iş ve süreç planlama yoğunluğuna ve aynı oranda stresli bir dönem yaşamamıza neden oldu.

2- İnsan sağlığı yönünden: Mobilya üretim sektörü emek yoğunluklu bir sektör olduğu için çalışanlarımızın ve bizim virüsü bulaştırma endişesi yaşadığımız bir dönem oldu. Aslında hala bu süreci yaşamaya devam ediyoruz. Tüm dünyada bu süreç tabi ki benzer bir şekilde yürüyor fakat bu dönem temelde çalışma yaşındaki her bireyi haklı olarak psikolojik olarak da olumsuz etkileyip endişeli bir sürece itiyor. Bu durumun çalışma motivasyonu üzerindeki olumsuz etkisinin sürekli hale geldiği oldukça açık. Bundan sonraki dönemde küresel ölçekte yeni bir döneme girildiğini kabul ederek çalışma ve sosyal düzenin buna göre şekillenmesi gerektiği bilinciyle hareket edip, organizasyonumuzu buna göre yeniden dizayn edeceğiz.

Üretim, lojistik ve dağıtım açısından işinize tekrardan organize olabildiniz mi?

Kendi organizasyonumuz özelinde üretim ve satış departmanlarında keskin bir ara verme süreci yaşanmadı. Pandemi ile ilgili en yoğun endişelerin olduğu dönemlerde birkaç günlük aralar vererek işimizin devamlılığını sağladık. Müşteri profilinin mağaza müşterisinden internet alışverişi yapan müşteriye evrilmesi ile daha çok dijital pazar yerlerine dönük üretim ve satışların artış gösterdiğini söyleyebiliriz. Bu doğrultuda organizasyonumuzu küçük revizyonlarla mevcut işleyişe adapte edebildik.

Bu süreçte üye olduğunuz birliklerin rolünü nasıl değerlendiriyorsunuz? Bu zorlu süreçte en çok hangi kurumlar yanınızda oldu?

Genel anlamda bu süreci atlatırken herhangi bir paydaşın desteği ile ilgili bir beklentiye girmedik. Diğer bir yandan bağlı bulunduğumuz Torbalı Ticaret Odası sokağa çıkma yasağının olduğu günlerde çok hızlı aksiyonlar aldı. Çalışma yürütmemiz ile ilgili izinleri organize edip önümüzü açarak yardımcı olmuştur.

Pandemi sürecinde hastane yataklarına ilgi arttı. Bu alanda üretiminiz var mı ya da üretim yapmayı planlıyor musunuz?

Mevcut üretim gruplarımızda hastane yatakları ve medikal gruplara dönük bir üretim bandı bulunmuyor. Kısa ve orta vadeli planlarımızın da içerisinde bu üretim grubuna dönük bir işleyiş yok.

Projelerinizde ve hedeflerinizde herhangi bir değişiklik oldu mu? (Fuarlar, ihracat çalışmalarınızdaki değişim, çözüm arayışlarınız…)

Mevcut işleyişimizde bahsi geçen; fuar, ihracat çalışmaları gibi enstrümanlar zaten ana planda yer alıyor. Tabi bunlara ek olarak dijital pazar yerlerinde bilinirliğimizin artışı ile ilgili çeşitli çalışmalar ve iyileştirmeler ile pazar payımızın artışı en temel hedeflerimiz arasında.

Aktarmak istediğiniz herhangi bir mesaj var mı?

Bu süreçte hepimizin daha net bir şekilde gözlemlediği ve farkına vardığı şey; insan yaşamındaki yegane unsurun insan sağlığı olduğu. Bunu unutmadan yaşayıp önce kendimizi ve etrafımızdakileri sonra da dünyadaki tüm bireylerin ve gelecekteki nesillerin sağlığını koruyacak yeni bir farkındalık anlayışını hayatımızın merkezine koymamızın gerekliliği oldukça açıktır.

What is the biggest challenge you have been facing these days?

Planning has never been a particularly easy task, but the spread of COVID-19 has made it even more difficult due to the unclear economic conditions, endless uncertainties and time horizons of the global pandemic. During these hard times, our initial considerations have been towards maintaining our health, both physical and mental. We are all experiencing a lot of intense emotions, fear, anxiety, hopelessness. Uncertainty is plaguing us all. Yet there are reasons for optimism in the long-term. In this regard, the actions taken by Ural Medikal have been successful thanks to the effort of all of us for remaining focused on reinforcing a healthy mindset and positivity in order to push forward and leverage new opportunities. These actions have helped us build value on the other side of this crisis.

A crisis requires quick thinking, agile strategic planning, immediate actions and a moving- forward mindset.

Have you been re-organized for working in terms of production, logistics and distribution?

Ural Medikal, as any other company, has a defining role to play in navigating the current crisis by ensuring an effective response, managing supply-chain disruptions, safeguarding the well-being of its ́ employees, and by adjusting daily working practices. As the pandemic continues to threaten the “business as usual” approach, global economic realities are significantly impacting every aspect of our lives. The massive changes in customer behavior and business outlook have put organizational priorities on the front lines. To chart a path forward, Ural Medikal is focusing on the now, while planning for recovery in the medium to long term, leading with purpose by taking care of its ́ stakeholders.

We see this period as an opportunity to establish our starting points and planning process to cut through the uncertainty and make the best possible decisions in order to maintain Ural’s reputation. Our main goal is to consistently deliver on our customers’ ́ requests and expectations by demonstrating agile adaptation to market shifts. As Ural Medikal, we actively continue with our production by formalizing and standardizing new operating procedures, processes, and tools that help keep the staff safe, even though the global lockdown period brought up some delays due to lack of supply chain functionality. Particularly, in the midst of this global pause, we focused on monitoring the company’s liquidity and earnings performance and on formally identifying the most relevant indicators among all the business lines and operational drivers. In this sense, we decided to reinvent our business by accelerating our digital ambition and analytics engines in order to improve purpose- driven decision making journeys that create trust and deliver more value to our customers.

Indeed, during this crisis there has been more interest in mattresses and pillows for medical purposes. As for Ural Medikal, which is one of the main medical suppliers in terms of memory foam products, we are proactively building bridges with other institutions for launching a new project in this regard. We are reorienting our efforts to genuinely address societýs needs, such as safety, security and everyday convenience.

Are there any changes in pre-programmed projects and objectives, such as fairs, export operations, solutions, etc.?

There are no changes in our pre-programmed projects, everything continues as the same. As our export operations are growing, we are looking forward to attending more fairs as soon as they start.

Is there any message you would like to underline?

The coronavirus crisis is causing sleep disturbance, a common stress response. Hence, it is important that we focus on fostering and developing healthier sleep patterns in order to get better rest. Better sleep habits help strengthen our immune system.
