Better Sleep Council offers tips to help parents get kids back to sleep

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia – Half of all American parents say Daylight Saving Time (DST) affects their kids and more than one-quarter (29%) report it’s more difficult to get children to sleep after the time change, according to a new survey from the Better Sleep Council, the nonprofit consumer education arm of the International Sleep Products Association. Of those parents who report bedtime challenges for their kids after DST, many (94%) report it takes two or more days for kids to get back into their regular sleep pattern and one-third (31%) say it takes six days or more.

Overall, more than one-quarter (28%) of all parents do not like putting their clock ahead one hour for DST. Other findings from this group:

  • Moms (32%) are more likely to feel this way than dads (22%)
  • Parents who use childcare (37%) are more likely to feel this way than parents who don’t use childcare (24%)
  • Parents who are unemployed/stay-at-home parents are more likely to feel this way (36%) than parents who work full time (25%)
  • Parents who feel their kids do not get enough sleep are also more likely to feel this way (37%) compared to parents who feel their kids do get enough sleep (25%)

When asked about children’s regular bedtime patterns, many parents reported they already feel like their kids aren’t getting enough sleep (24%). About half (48%) of those same parents find it at least somewhat frustrating to get their kids to sleep on a typical night. These feelings are more prevalent with parents of tweens and teens (11-18 years).

The BSC suggests the following top tips to help kids get back into their regular sleep pattern after Daylight Saving Time goes into effect:

  • Go slow. In the week before DST, try to put your kids to bed 15 minutes early to prep them for the time change.
  • Generate a ritual. Your kids likely already have a bedtime routine. Stick with it and consider adding an extra step or two like reading a storybook together or having them take a warm bath or shower to help relax before bed.
  • Keep it light. Avoid eating heavy meals at least two to three hours before bed. Eating too close to bedtime can interfere with sleep quality.

The Better Sleep Council is the consumer education arm of the International Sleep Products Association, the trade association for the mattress industry. With decades invested in improving sleep quality, the BSC educates consumers on the link between sleep and health, and the role of the sleep environment, primarily through www.bettersleep.org, partner support and consumer outreach.

Sleeping positions and durations may vary, but did you know that sleep habits might vary too, depending on the geography and the country where people live?

Exports of mattresses made in Turkey are growing fast. The success depends on the amount of knowledge about the market and the habits of consumers that the companies were aware of. We search for differences among variety of sleep habits encountered in the world. These may lead us to new mattress forms and technologies.

People may snooze in the work place. No problem!

Calling long durations of sleep as laziness, the Japanese may tolerate the ones who sleep at work. Inemuri is a term to use to describe sleeping at the most convenient place. Kids may sleep with their parents in the same bed and this explains why larger mattresses are common in Japan.

Sleeping cabins (or capsules) are another trend in Japan. First seen in 1979, the capsule hotels are seen more frequently than in the past, a solution to the high cost of accommodation in city centers.

man-sleeping-at-airportSleep chambers in Australia

According to the info furnished by Yasmine Musharbash, an anthropolog of Sydney University, Aborigines sleep in groups. Natives sleep in chamber form where old and the kids sleep at the center, young males lay at the periphery. Thus the clan may sleep in security.

Siesta is a symbol in Spain and in Mexico

When mentioned siesta it reminds Latin America and Mexico to everyone in the world. Basically, siesta is a tradition in Spain. Mexicans then had this habit and carry this up to the present time. Also Van Gogh’s painting named The Siesta is the most famous in the world.

In hunting clans sleep is free from time

Antropolog Carol Worthman told in Discovery magazine that members of Kung clan in Botswana and Efe clan in Zaire sleep whenever they desire to. You may encounter them in sleep at every time in night or day. They have their naps more than ones in 24 hours. Experts say that this is the best remedy to solve sleep deprivation problems without having any drug.

WIndonesians sleep for overcoming their fears and negative feelings

An interesting habit is seen in Bali Island; people who are afraid of something and having high level of stress go into deep sleep to overcome the problem. Called todet poeles, that is, sleep of fear, is a remedy for both.

Britons strip down for sleep

Research suggest that one out of three people go into bed naked. Science is divided for the benefits or harms of sleeping without underwear. It may help to regulate the heat  but may cause problems in the winter.

Restless legs syndrome

Restless legs syndrome is a syndrome that patient feels an uncomfortable and strange feeling on the legs but he cannot describe exactly; and as a result of this feeling he can not fall asleep. As a rule, patient feels this strange feeing while he rests; and complains about the inability to explain it to other people and to doctors. Because, this feeling – which cannot be called as pain- is sometimes described as tingling, numbness, pull out of legs by the patient. Some patients describe this feeling as “my legs are being squeezed”. Patients get rid of this feeling only if they move their legs. Patient feels relaxed for some time after moving the legs; but would start to feel the same feeling only a few minutes later.

This is quite common disease in the community with a rate of 5%. Because of leg pain; the patients generally go to rheumatic disease experts or physic-therapists. However, it is easily distinguishable from other leg pains; because it stops when the legs are moved and starts again when the person rests.

Syndrome occurs more often as the patient gets older and its severity increases gradually. Because of restless on their legs, patients cannot watch TV at nights, they cannot go to visit their friends and most importantly, they have difficulty to sleep when they go to bed. Because of the strange feeling on the legs, patient has to move constantly. Many patients feel obliged to go out of the bed and walk around as they cannot sleep. Patients experience the same feeling when they wake up at midnight and they have difficulty of falling asleep again. Patients with restless legs syndrome feel uncomfortable in the environments where their movements are constrained; such as cinema, theater, long trips etc. There, they prefer to sit in corridor seat in order to be able to move their legs.

As Family members of patients generally have similar complaints, it is considered that the syndrome may be genetically transferrable.

Although in the studies it is rarely detected some diseases such as iron deficiency, uremia, diabetic, etc.; 95% of this syndrome emerge as idiopathic (cause unknown)

Lately, it has been revealed that; although the syndrome mostly affects the legs, it can rarely affect the arms. Following this development, the name of syndrome was changed as restless arms and legs syndrome.

* At any sign of drowsiness, Steer will warn you with vibration and gentle electric impulse, so you do not fall asleep while driving.

Every day, hundreds of millions of people drive cars, but very little of them think how dangerous it is to drive while being tired.

While driving drowsy, the driver is very vulnerable to “micro-sleep”, says in a report published in kickstarter.com. Micro-sleep can last for up to 30 seconds, and when it occurs, the driver is unconscious and does not respond to any environmental sensors, such as sound or light.

a04d86424d553bd8331dc40bced8ebba_originalMicro-sleep is often a result of sleep deprivation, but also often occurs while driving monotonously for a long time. A new wearable “Steer” prevents driver from experiencing micro-sleep at the very first signs of tiredness.

Steer is a bracelet that will help drivers to not fall asleep behind the wheel. Steer detects the level of your drowsiness by analyzing heart rate and skin conductance and warns you when your condition is close to sleeping.

Besides warning you about the fact that you are drowsy, Steer actually wakes you up, so you are safe to continue the journey. Steer bracelet is intended for all drivers and everyone who suffer from sleep deprivation from time to time.

It is useful for long journeys to different city or state, as well as short journeys to work in the morning when you just woke up and still feeling sleepy.

Reducing allergens in bedding

* Hohenstein and Centa-Star develop special bedding for dust mite allergy sufferers

Between 10 and 15% of the population are allergic to dust mites, asthma is one of the most common illnesses in the world – and the number of people affected is rising year after year. Millions of Germans are familiar with year-round runny noses in the mornings, sneezing attacks, itchy eyes and severe reactions that may include shortage of breath. The symptoms often have a very detrimental effect on their everyday lives, so taking preventive measures is important, from the point of view of both the economy and healthcare policy. For allergy sufferers, the most important preventive measure they can take is to keep allergens away from their respiratory organs – especially in the bedroom.

One of the main areas of work at the Hohenstein Group’s William Küster Institute for Hygiene, Environment and Medicine (WKI) is researching the compatibility of textiles for users, and this includes the management of allergens. That is why Hohenstein spotted the potential of textile-based allergy prevention at an early stage and worked closely with the industry to find a solution: over months of fundamental research, and multiple optimization stages, Hohenstein developed a negatively charged textile finish which attracts the positively-charged allergens like a magnet.

D-Qualitätslabel_gepruefteKinderbekleidung_5Now, in partnership with the Stuttgart-based bedding manufacturer Centa-Star, Hohenstein has turned this textile finish into a marketable product: AllergoProtect – a trio of products consisting of mattress topper, duvet and pillow, which retain over 99.5% of the allergens inside the filling and the cover, even under great mechanical strain, for example when the bedding is shaken. This means the allergens are not breathed in and no longer cause allergic reactions. During washing, the allergens bound to the fibers are removed from the filling of the bedding, and the physical binding function of the textile is regenerated – and remains fully effective even after 10 washes at 60°C in a domestic washing machine using heavyduty detergent followed by tumble drying.

Hohenstein also helps with market positioning, thanks to its quality label and regular quality control of the materials that are used. AllergoProtect is certified under the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX Class I – the Standard 100 product class that has the strictest specifications for human ecology.

The endurance testing for AllergoProtect was carried out by the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation and it has been awarded the ECARF Seal of Quality. In trials with volunteers, the effectiveness of AllergoProtect was impressively demonstrated. Now AllergoProtect is protected by a registered patent and after just a short time is already in great demand in the retail business. So AllergoProtect is just one more example of the success that proves the Hohenstein Institute to be a reliable research partner for industry.

Three questions for Dr. Hammer, from Hohenstein, and Thomas Müller, from Centa-Star:

1. How did the idea come about of using a special textile finish to bind the allergens to the bedding so that allergy sufferers are protected from them?

Dr. Hammer, Hohenstein: The idea was the result of looking at an entirely different

question: at the WKI we had been closely studying the question of how odor molecules (such as sweat odor) could be bound to fibres and how they could then be released from the fibers again. Precisely this binding of the molecules to the fibers is an effective way of keeping the odors away from your nose. So we hit upon the idea of applying the same principle to allergens.

• Thomas Müller, Centa-Star: The researchers at the Hohenstein Institute found out that allergens have a positive charge. So we jointly came up with the idea of developing a product for allergy sufferers which would make use of the physical principle of magnetic attraction – instead of the heavy-duty encasings and biocides that had been used until then.

2. How did the partnership with Centa-Star come about?

Dr. Hammer, Hohenstein: Centa-Star and Hohenstein have been working together for a long time. So Centa-Star is a member of our Scientific Board, a committee made up of representatives from industry and associations which advises Hohenstein’s researchers on converting research results into industrial applications. After all, the best research results are of little use if they have no practical significance. Then when we were chatting, we decided to work together on this project.

3. What were the main challenges when you were developing AllergoProtect?

Thomas Müller, Centa-Star: The binding of the allergens needed to be very effective. But at the same time, the effect had to be reversible, because it had to be possible to remove the allergens by washing in the washing machine. And of course the materials that were used needed, themselves, to be skin-friendly and non-allergenic and proven in countless tests and trials with volunteers. At the end of this long process, the products were successfully awarded the Seal of Quality and certified under Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX. Last but not least, marketing this new product in an easily understandable way was also quite a challenge.

The first sleep should start in crib

Safety should be the first priority in the selection of crib

Pre- and post-sleep environment is as important as the selection of crib for healthy and sound sleep of newborns. Şükrü Yener, M.D., from Pediatrics Department of Medical Park Gaziosmanpaşa Hospital says that newborns should be accustomed to sleep in a crib rather than sleeping while being held by the mother and he makes advices on the selection of crib.

Correct timing for acclimation to baby room is as important as the selection of crib to ensure a healthy sleep. Pediatrician Şükrü Yener, M.D., from Medical Park Gaziosmanpaşa Hospital says that babies should be held by mothers immediately after birth and this bond should be conserved for the first 6 months of life and he made the following advices on the new home life with the baby:

BABY SHOULD SLEEP IN CRIB, NOT IN MOTHER’S HUG

After being discharged to home, the newborn should sleep in crib nearby the mother’s bed. A newborn should never be allowed to sleep by cuddling up to the mother. This is the reason of many infant deaths. The newborn should lie down on back.  Anyway, babies instinctively lie back, but they turn their head to right and left sides during sleep. The head is also instinctively turned to either side. You should not correct the position of the baby. The belief “If I make him lie on back, the head will stay straight” is also wrong. Because he will, anyway, turn the head to the right or the left while sleeping.

PUT BED LINING THAT SMELLS LIKE YOU IN CRIB

Sometimes, parents try to make the baby fall asleep in their bed. This turns into a custom, resulting in discomfort for parents. In order to avoid this custom, put a bed linen that smells like your skin into the crib and let the baby sleep on this linen in the crib or his bed for 1 to 2 days. You will, certainly, recognize that he acclimates to his bed and stops sleeping with parents.

START ACCLIMATION TO HIS ROOM 6 MONTHS AFTER BIRTH

The baby should sleep nearby the mother, as breastfeeding is a necessity for the first 6 months of life. When the 6 months old baby is started on new foods, it also implies transition to the baby room. At this phase, you need to visit him in his room. In other words, you need to sleep on a couch close to him where he can see you and stay in his room until he falls asleep in order to make him feel safe. He will acclimate to his room after a while and thus, a sound sleeping system will start to work.

SOFT LIGHT, SILENT ENVIRONMENT AND SLOW MUSIC…

The sleep time should imply a warmhearted, peaceful and comfortable process for the baby. A softly illuminated, silent, safe and sun-exposed room that is ventilated every day and free of strong air flow with finely tuned humidity should be preferred. The room temperature should be maintained at 21 to 25 °C. If the baby should be accustomed to a pre-sleep routine that is characterized by silent environment, soft light and slow music, such environmental features will make the baby feel that it is time to sleep.

REMOVE THE PACIFIER BEFORE HE FALLS ASLEEP

Do not allow the baby fall asleep with the pacifier. The pacifier helps satisfying the sucking reflex, not for making him fall asleep. If the baby falls asleep with a pacifier in the mouth, remove it before he progresses into deep sleep.

SAFETY FIRST

Five principal criteria apply to the selection of crib and bed; safety, portability, comfort, function and price. Portability is among the pioneering features of a crib. It is also the most important feature that distinguishes a crib from other baby beds. Otherwise, it is not possible to keep our baby under supervision constantly. Portable cribs that are commercially available are characterized by light material, rollaway wheels and foldability. Although portability is an important criterion in the selection of a crib, it is also associated by some safety risks. Therefore, the pioneering criterion should, undoubtedly, be safety.

LIGHT MATERIAL IMPLIES RISK OF TILTING OVER

The risk of tilting over in cribs that are made of light materials is a threat against safety of the baby. The crib can easily tilt over, if a child running around at home crashes the crib or a pet climbs on or pushes down the crib. The same risk applies to foldable cribs. Therefore, material, assembly and standing quality require attention when a crib is bought.

NATURAL IS HEALTHY

Natural materials should be preferred to the maximum extent when a crib is bought. When safety and health are taken into consideration, wooden materials come to the forefront. Wood is advantageous not only for health and durability, but also for safety. The disadvantage is the weight of the material. Wood is the most commonly preferred material for non-portable baby cribs. However, solid wood is the healthiest material for baby rooms. Solid wood is outstandingly healthy due to natural structure of wood. The material does not allow growth of molds and bacteria.

TOYS AND ORNAMENTS MAY POSE RISK

The baby bed should be as empty as possible. Unnecessary ornaments, toys or pillows pose a serious risk. Material of bed covers should necessarily allow air circulation. For example, perforated blanket or coverlets with high air permeability can be used. Heavy quilts or bed covers that hinder air circulation should necessarily be avoided.

16 golden rules for a quality sleep

Prof. Okan Bolukbası

* Vital information about sleep for everybody

Prof. Okan Bolukbası, M.D., from Neurology Department of Okan University Hospital furnished us with important details about sleep in an interview for Sleep Well magazine.

What is sleep?

It is very difficult to describe sleep in scientific terms. Until the 1950s, many people supposed sleeping was an inactive part of our daily life. But, now we know that our brain is very active during sleep. Moreover, we are confident that sleep affects our physical and mental health.

What are causes of insomnia?

Drugs and sprays that help breathing, caffeinated beverages, diet pills, diseases, bad conditions in the bedroom…

Does smoking affect negatively?

It does very much. Smoking addicts usually have a very light sleep (catnap). REM sleep (the period of sleep characterized by active eye movements) is especially short. They sleep for 3 to 4 hours after they fall asleep as blood nicotine level decreases below the critical level. Alcohol also influences quality of sleep negatively. Most people with sleeplessness try to solve the problem with alcohol. But, this is just like jumping out of the frying pan into the fire. Person becomes alcoholic without even recognizing this fact! However, alcohol triggers only a light sleep (nap). It shortens other periods of sleep that have repair function.

What is the optimal duration of sleep?

Infants usually require 16 hours of sleep. In most adults, 7-8 hours of sleep is sufficient. Young adults need nine hours of sleep on average. Women need more sleep in the first 3 months of the pregnancy. The unmet need of sleep causes a kind of “sleep debt”. The body will request pay-back of the debt soon or later. Inadequate sleep affects the reasoning or reaction times negatively. As people get older, sleep time shortens and sleep becomes lighter. Insomnia is a common problem for people older than 65.

When is it recognized as a problem?

If you feel sleepy all day long or if you are able to fall asleep immediately even at a 5-minute break, you have a serious sleep problem.

What problems cause insomnia?

Sleep-related health problems are related with almost all disciplines of the medicine. For example, paralysis or asthma episodes occur more commonly during sleep in the evening or early morning rather than the daytime. Possible cause is the changes in the heart rate or hormone levels. Insomnia triggers the development of seizures in some types of epilepsy.

Why do we get sleepy during flu?

There is a close relationship between the nerve cells regulating the sleep and the immune system. Our body produces certain chemicals, called ‘cytokines’, while fighting against infectious diseases. These cytokines are also potent sleep stimulants.

Is there any relationship between mental disorders and insomnia?

Sleep problems develop in the majority of mental illnesses. For example, depressive patients get up very early in the morning and often fail falling asleep despite a strong wish. The duration of actual sleep poses direct effect on severity of symptoms in mental diseases. In patients with manic-depressive disorder, sleep deprivation can trigger manic periods (aggression and hyperactivity).

What is the sleep apnea?

It implies interruption of breathing during sleep. Poor oxygenation over the night can lead to headache in the morning and tiredness throughout the day. Absence of sexual drive, weakening of cognitive functions, increased blood pressure and irregular heart rhythm are possible consequences. Sleep apnea significantly increases the risk of stroke or heart attack. It is among the causes of death due to respiratory arrest during sleep. If the sleep apnea is left untreated, the risk of a traffic accident increases three folds.

What is restless leg syndrome?

The term refers leg cramps, numbness, pinching and tingling sensations especially in legs during sleep. The patient constantly needs to move legs. It can be develop at any age. Anemia (iron deficiency anemia), pregnancy and diabetes mellitus pave the way for this condition. The patient relaxes in response to dopamine derivatives – a neurochemical stimulant.

IF YOU WANT TO FALL SOUND ASLEEP

  • If you are taking a nap during the day, do not exceed 30 minutes. Longer naps will affect the night sleep negatively.
  • Stay away from stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine before going to sleep. You can eat a high protein snack or a fruit 2-3 hours before sleep. These foods boost synthesis of sleep-regulating hormones. But stay away from cereals and sugar as they deteriorate the rhythm of sleep. Avoid fatty, fried, spicy and carbonated food and beverages as well as ones that contain vinegar.
  • Exercise ensures a good quality of sleep. Even a 10-minute biking or jogging will significantly increase the quality of night sleep. However, do not exercise strenuously during bedtime.
  • Stay exposed to natural light all day long. Your bedroom should not be so bright at night.
  • Get a useful relaxing habit before sleep, such as warm shower, reading book, light stretching exercises, meditation…
  • Avoid extremely emotional speech or environments before sleep.
  • Your bed linen and bedcover set are appropriate, and your pillow and bed should be comfortable. Your bedroom should be cool, not hot or even warm. One of the signs that prepare the body for sleep is the decreased ambient temperature.
  • Your bedroom should be free of light and sound sources, such as televisions and mobile phones. If necessary, you may use dark curtains, fan, air humidifiers, and earplugs.
  • Do not let any electric appliance to be closer than 1 meter. Do not use noisy alarms. They create anticipation anxiety in the body.
  • Use your bed only to sleep. Go to bed as early as possible. 23.00 is the most ideal time. Because our adrenal system starts regenerating between 23.00 and 01.00. You had better be asleep at this interval. The gallbladder also detoxifies the body in this period. If you wake up, the poisons return to the liver.
  • Do not change your bedtime. Get up in the morning at the time you need to get up.
  • Wear bed socks. Feet are the most chilled area of the body. Wearing bed-socks reduces sleep interruptions in the evening. Forget about your daily business in the last 2 hours before you go to bed.
  • You can listen to relaxing music. Spiritual practices and readings that comfort you will be useful before sleep
  • Take as few drugs as possible. Most drugs affect sleep patterns.
  • Get down to your ideal weight.
  • Avoid foods that disturb you or cause gas distension.

Clean up your sleep

Clean sleeping, like clean eating, allows you to achieve good mental and physical health by taking sleep seriously and committing to getting the amount of sleep your body needs, without pills, prescriptions or sleep aids. Naturally adjusting your surroundings and activities allows you to gently slip into sleep each night. Clean sleep can be the key to gentle aging, lowered stress and anxiety, staying slim, and looking and feeling good. Take these steps to achieve clean sleep:

Use yoga. Practice yoga nidra, a style of yoga that relaxes muscles and brings the mind and body to a restful state, before bedtime.

Feel your way. Take a moment to explore your mattress for lumps, bumps or valleys. These are all signs your mattress is due for a replacement. If your mattress is more than five or seven years old, it’s time to replace it with a new model that gives you the support and comfort you need each night.

Sip for sleep. Instead of drinking alcohol (or anything with caffeine in it) before bed, whip up a sleep brew that will help you relax and unwind. Mix chamomile, lavender and valerian, and steep in hot water. One small cup an hour before bedtime will help you sleep.

Delve into darkness. Prepare your room for sleep with black-out curtains, room-darkening blinds or a sleep mask. Light disrupts natural sleep.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T. People who eat clean develop a sense of respect and appreciation for the healthy food that gives them energy and keeps them well. To sleep clean, approach sleep with that same level of recognition. See the important role sleep plays in your health and allow sleep to be part of the harmony of your life. View it not as an obligation, but as a welcome respite.

Noises off. Make sure your bedroom is quiet and play some soft meditation music on a timer, or wear earplugs to block out sounds.

Sleep scents. Aromatherapy using lavender or sandalwood can relax your body for sleep.

Gentle touch. 100% cotton sheets and pajamas provide a soft feel that is soothing. If you tend to feel hot while sleeping, choose moisture-wicking pajamas.

How to have a good relationship with your mattress

$

* Once you have a new mattress, you want to take care of it so that it will stay in good condition. The Better Sleep Council offers the following tips to keep your mattress healthy and happy.

By Hilal Gökmen

Get started on the right foot. Making sure your new mattress and foundation are properly installed in your bedroom is the first step in caring for your new bed. Improper installation can damage your new sleep set. If you choose to transport and install it yourself, ask store personnel for advice to help you avoid problems.

Rotate it. Unless your mattress care instructions indicate otherwise, you may want to periodically rotate your mattress from end-to-end and flip it over, if applicable.

Cover it up. A good-quality, washable mattress cover (and one for the foundation or box spring, too, if you like) is a must to keep your set fresh and free from stains. It also protects your mattress from dust mites and allergens.

Deep breaths. If you detect a slight new product odor when you first get your new set, leave the mattress and foundation uncovered and well ventilated overnight. A breath of fresh air should do the trick.

Provide good support. Be sure to use a sturdy, high-quality bed frame. For a queen- or king-size set, make sure your frame has a strong center support that will prevent the mattress from bowing or breaking.

Playing mattress tag. Contrary to popular belief (and many comedy routines), it’s not illegal to remove the tag on a mattress, but the information on the label will serve as a means of identification should you have a warranty claim, so you should leave it for future reference.

No little monkeys on your bed. Don’t let the kids jump on your sleep set. Their roughhousing could damage the interior construction of your bed, and more importantly, they could get hurt.

Don’t get board. Never put a board between the mattress and foundation. It may enhance the sense of support for a while, but it will only make the problem worse over time. If you feel like your bed needs a board for extra support, it means it’s time to get rid of it and get a new mattress.

Follow manufacturer’s instructions. Be sure to follow any specific guidelines from your manufacturer about the best method of mattress care.

Out with the old. Now that you’ve treated yourself to a new sleep set, arrange to have your old bed removed and disposed of. Don’t give it to kids, relatives, guests or neighbors or try to donate it to a charitable organization. If it wasn’t good enough for you, it isn’t good enough for anyone else. Throw it out!

  • Brittany Mollis, Naturapedic: “We mastered the art of creating an organic mattress that looks as good as it feels, and we are so excited to share the results with you. So without further ado, we’re proud to introduce our new luxury line: Halcyon.”

A perfect combination of elegance and comfort, the Halcyon collection was designed to provide safe, healthy sleep in style. This collection features three organic options: Azure, Arcadia, and Elysium. Each option features the finest organic cotton and latex, a luxury wool blend, and encased support coils to provide unparalleled comfort.

So what makes this combination of materials so special? Let’s take a look at what’s inside each mattress.

Organic cotton: This means there are absolutely no harmful chemicals. Organic cotton is the purest form of cotton and a healthier alternative to synthetic fabrics and foams. Naturepedic uses only U.S. grown and certified organic cotton as filling for its mattresses and buys directly from USDA certified sources. This increases purity, organic reliability.

Organic latex: Unlike synthetic latex found in many products, our latex is made from the milk of a rubber tree. We only source our latex foam from reputable certified organic suppliers, ensuring purity, fair labor practices and support for healthy farming to protect our planet’s latex forests. Latex is known to relieve pressure-points, allowing a comfortable night’s sleep.

Organic support coils: Coils of Halycon are individually wrapped in certified organic cotton fabric and hand assembled for unmatched quality. This method ensures isolation of movement and pressure point relieving comfort that contours to your body.

Luxury wool blend: All Halcyon mattresses include a luxury wool blend layer consisting of organic wool, alpaca, and cashmere to allow you to stay cool in summer and warm in winter. This unique blend offers improved comfort for a more luxurious sleep. Organic wool of Halcyon comes from healthy, well-treated sheep, and we do not use harmful chemicals in the processing of the wool.

There is also a non-latex option for those who have latex allergies.

The Halcyon luxury collection offers more than mattresses—it offers the ultimate sleep experience.

Sabah Yatak is on the side of hotel businesses with professional solutions

Celebrating its 36th anniversary Sabah Yatak Company now has a 10 thousand sqm factory and capacity to produce 1200 pieces of mattresses and bases annually on its modern machinery inventory. Sales and Marketing manager of the company Uraz Solmaz says that their production is mostly sold to touristic facilities and student hostels in the country and abroad. He told us about the growth plans and new product lines of this leading brand.

Mister Uraz, where are your sales points located both at home and abroad? What is your competitive power in the channels that you export to?

We do not have certain distributors in domestic market. Our brand offices responsible for Mediterranean and Aegean sales are in direct contacts with all hotels in their regions. Hotel managers are demanding to establish direct communication with mattress manufacturers; as a result the distribution channels cannot be functional in domestic market.

The situation is somehow different in the markets abroad. There are both international hotel groups that we have direct contact with them and some representative companies in these countries. We work with this way in all CIS countries, central Europe and in the Balkans. In these cases we visit our customers together with our reps in that country, in case of need.

What were the major projects in 2018 and will you tell us about the projects you completed in the tourism sector?

Thailand has been a hope for us among the countries that we entered first in export markets. We will move ahead in this country. Besides we have completed hotel projects in Hyatt Tashkent, Hyatt Belgrade, Radisson Blu Ivory Coast, Abidjan, Hydra Algeria, Marriott Tiflis, Armenia, Spain and Sheraton Bishkek in addition to Limak Cyrus De Luxe and Concorde Luxury Resort Hotel in 2018.

Are there any special design projects this year? What is your production strategy in 2019?

We developed a new product group named Hotelflex, having five different mattress models that were designed for our slogan “economic comfort” that targets 3 and 4 star seashore hotels. It is an alternative solution for “mattress repair”, a raising need lately.

Some hotels target to utilize their old mattresses for an additional ten years by changing the fabric and upper layers of mattresses after using them 10 to 15 years. Mites, bacteria living inside the mattress remain untouched. This is a real problem for hygiene. So, we made this economic product line for those buyers by telling them “do not repair, renew them cheaply”.

Product designs have been changing depending on the trends emerging hotels in the last decade or so. What is the position of your brand in this change?

That’s true. The hotels in the country have been affected by these changes in the market and it is going on now. The result of this change can be summarized as the rise in product quality, the use of environment friendly materials, the raising standards for manufacturing, the growing demand for flame retarded, hygienic, and long lasting products and higher comforts.

Would you share info about what is on your agenda in terms of your new investments and projects?

We think that the year 2019 will be favorable for the tourism industry in Turkey. We observe a growing investment trend for renovation projects in seashore hotels. We, as Sabah Yatak, try to follow the developments in the market with our field sales staff by participating in fairs in the country and abroad. We plan to take place beside our hotel managements with our functional product groups that aim all segments of buyers from top to bottom who demand economical products.

Heimtextil’s key topic: “Sleep”

$

Current studies show that an increasing number of people are sleeping badly. Researchers cite stress, noise, increasing light pollution and the permanent availability of smartphones and the like as the causes. Heimtextil (7-10 January 2020) is once again making a restorative night’s sleep a key topic in order to bolster dealers’ expertise on the subject of sleep.

The number of people sleeping badly or too little has been increasing for many years now. This was proven by a health report published in 2019 by the health insurance company Barmer that focused on sleep disorders: according to the report, in 2017 one million employed people were diagnosed with disorders in falling asleep and sleeping through the night. This comprises an increase of 111 per cent within twelve years, say the authors, who also estimate that the number of cases going unreported is actually far higher.

More and more people are suffering from the consequences of a lack of sleep, i.e. concentration and metabolic disorders, a weakened immune system and even cardiovascular problems. Many people are asking themselves: how can I sleep better and more healthily? At the upcoming Heimtextil, around 150 international major players in the industry and start-ups will present solutions in the product segment “Smart Bedding” in hall 11.0.

“Sleep! The Future Forum”: knowledge transfer and product launches

In addition, an in-depth programme of lectures will take place for the second time in hall 11.0: in “Sleep! The Future Forum”, bed dealers and hospitality enthusiasts in particular will be presented with valuable information from industry, science and research. Prof. Ingo Fietze, sleep expert at Berlin’s Charité, sleep coach Nick Littlehales and Olympic luge champion Susi Erdmann are among those who will talk about market trends and new developments for a better night’s sleep in the thematic blocks of digital, sport, hospitality, sustainability and interior design.

The forum will also present product innovations by renowned companies: Auping, Hästens and Ikea, for example, will launch new beds or technology and software solutions for the bedroom.

Auping: well-rested thanks to anti-snoring app

With the new development by the Cologne-based Heimtextil exhibitor Auping, all those who suffer from snoring should get a healthier night’s rest. Together with product and software specialists, the company has developed an anti-snoring app. The market for this should be considerable: according to current figures from the Techniker Krankenkasse health insurance company, 20 to 46 per cent of all men in middle to old age snore and up to 25 per cent of women are affected. ‘Snoring has a great impact on everyday life. Those who snore a lot won’t enjoy a rested start to the day’, says Anna Havermann, marketing manager at Auping. She states that they wanted to develop an unobtrusive anti-snoring solution that, in contrast to sleep masks or special mouth braces, would be barely noticed during sleep. This is how the smart aid works: the app linked to the bed measures the decibel level reached by the user’s snoring. Once an adjustable maximum volume is reached, the app notifies the mechanically adjustable bed that raises the back section slightly to open up the airways. Or it can briefly move the whole bed to cause the snorer to change position.

Hästens: a good night’s sleep crafted by hand

Hästens, the oldest bed manufacturer in Sweden, will present a compact central European bed at Heimtextil that, with its three spring systems and a mattress, comprises a total of 37 layers of various natural materials, including linen, cotton, wool and horsehair. ‘We want to combine traditional craftsmanship, the joy of innovation and natural materials with promoting good sleep over the long term’, says Jan Ryde, CEO of the family company that was founded in 1852. The company, which has already been granted a royal warrant twice by the Swedish royal family, has proven that the combination of craftsmanship and innovative strength works, particulary in the development of the pocket sprung mattress. Ryde will not reveal which bed the King of Sweden sleeps on, however: ‘Our beds are also appreciated by celebrities all over the world’. The company will not divulge any information about their sleeping preferences, and understandably so.

Ikea: democratic design in the bedroom

In addition to presenting the latest bed models, Ikea Germany will also be giving a lecture at “Sleep! The Future Forum”: ‘The importance of sleep for health and well-being is under appreciated’, states Sandra Schwertfeger, interior design manager at the Swedish furniture giant, with certainty. ‘We therefore want to show how textiles can contribute to healthier sleep’. The ethos is: what can good sleep do for your life and what can your home do for your sleep? The typical Ikea “democratic design” plays a role in this: modern, sustainable and cheap furnishing solutions for the bedroom that support people in improving their nightly rest and thus their lives.

Yitas Bed-Baza, which sets out with the slogan “Peace from nature to your bed”, blends its 60 years of retail experience with good observation and renewed R&D studies. Now it is one of the leading companies in the mattress industry.

Talha İrfan Yigit, General Manager of the company, shares info about his patented products, the Sleep Center project under development and the problems of the sector.

Melting of experience with R&D

Having 60 years of retail experience in the furniture sector, YITAS has started to produce mattresses by adding R&D studies to its experience and observing the sector and customer demands closely. Yitaş and Swiss Love Bed brands have production facilities of 30,000 square meters in Konya Organized Industrial Zone. Talha Irfan Yigit, general manager of Yitas, who realized the necessity of R&D in the production of beds, said, “We have devoted one thousand sqm, area in our factory to R&D activities and are trying to provide the best beds to our customers.”

The secret of success

As Yitaş family, we aim to take each step of progress securely while extending our business. We strive to build our team with sound, well-equipped, knowledgeable, and hardworking people. Our company, who does not want to experience the fall of the fate of the fast rising ones, takes care to take part in all the works that will contribute to the sector by progressing to its targets with sound steps.”

Patents of base with safe-box own by Yitas

One of the first five companies among the manufacturers of bases, beds and home textiles in Turke, Yitas, emerges as a company offering the widest array of potential options having 45 different kinds of bases and 63 kinds of specific items in its product portfolio. In the production of beds which are complementary to the bedroom as well as base and accessories, it offers 32 types of mattresses to the consumers by using the latest technology reached by the sector, such as latex, visco, pocket spring, 7 zone spring mattress and sl spring types. In addition to remote controlled medical bases, the company produces all the bases that can be produced in the sector such as oval bases, hotel type bases, boxspring bases with patented Yitas brand safe-box bases. Bedside products of the base, such as bedside tables, marquise (Ottoman), dresser and dresser mirror, such as furniture products in the bedroom are also offered as variety of models to consumers.

About product packaging, Yigit said, “We can deliver our beds in the form of nylon press without touching our beds and pack them with Roll Pack winding system if desired. Under the most hygienic conditions, the latest system is manufactured and packaged on the line without touching the bed and the bases are sold with a 5-year product warranty.”

Yitas, which is selling mostly in Turkey, is expanding its export network by establishing sales points in the Gulf countries and African markets, especially in Europe.

Target is to establish Sleep Centers

Yiğit said, “As far as this stage, our goal was to invest in our factory and machinery and deliver hygienic products with the latest technology. We have reached our ideal position; the next target is to accelerate the promotion and advertising efforts in order to backup to these investments.”

Yiğit added that ‘Sleep Center’ project, which they have done their infrastructure works for a long time but postponed the process because of the circumstances which our country passes, “We aim to bring our products to the market by participating in more fairs, engaging more travel and the putting more support of our foreign trade representatives.”

Firsts that was brought by R&D studies

Talha Irfan Yigit said: “As Yitas, we produced the electrically heated beds with thermostate. Yitas produced three types of mattresses with the motto “For those who say my spine is aching” to our consumers who have low back pain. Yitas produces woolen mattress, which is important for human health, that absorbs sweat naturelly and is a natural stress-absorbing product. Our legendary base, which is a medical product that is remotely controlled, supporting the body form on six points, especially for the elderly and those in need of care, is produced only in our company that has German Hartmant slat and icon motor.”

“Turkey improves in mattress production”

Once in the past, Turkey, was producing mattresses of much more backward technology from European countries and the United States. We were ahead only of African countries and those in the Arabian Peninsula. Presently, the point in bedding manufacturers has reached in Turkey having latest technology and machinery, manufacturing firms are doing well and it is carried the industry up to the top.

Yiğit said: “In the textile field, we produce and manufacture hundreds of cotton knitted fabrics, wool fabrics and different quality fabrics such as bamboo, aleo vera, cool max, milky and silky. These are all show that mattress industry is developing well in Turkey.”

Yigit said: “As Yitas family, with our pride, we can say that we are now producing bedspreads as much better mattresses as those of products of European companies such as Tempur, Roviva, Hasena, Bico, Hastens, Halsa and so on.”

“VAT is a big problem in mattress industry”

One of the biggest problems of the mattress sector is the VAT issue. Yigit said: “The confusion caused by the discrepancy between the products sold at different levels of VAT, between 8% and 18%. For the mattresses, which is the most natural need of the human, the VAT should be much lower than its present level of 18%, it is sine qua non for our industry.”

Yigit stated that the lack of qualified personnel in all sectors or short-term work in business life is a big problem in terms of production. “Smaller, pop-up enterprises that produce from old beds called quit-beds should be controlled. We expect that the authorities should implement the necessary measures and incentives for the mattress sector,” he says.
