ALEXANDRIA, VA (PRWEB) – Responding to member interest in improving the content and usability of industry statistics, The International Sleep Products Association (ISPA), the trade association representing mattress manufacturers and component suppliers, today announced that it has replaced its monthly Bedding Barometer with the Bedding Market Quarterly, starting first quarter of 2016. In addition to adopting a frequency that aligns with industry best practices, Bedding Market Quarterly readers will look forward to more comprehensive and useful data presented in a visually appealing format with enhanced accessibility.

“ISPA member surveys tell us that the industry wants better access to the statistical data we publish, and they are looking for different kinds of information that will help them respond to ever changing market dynamics. Our decision to move to quarterly reporting is an exciting development for ISPA, our members and those that rely on our data and analysis,” said ISPA President Ryan Trainer. “Bedding Market Quarterly will provide ISPA members and subscribers with more useful data that also aligns with industry reporting practices. We will strive to stay at the leading edge of bedding industry reporting and believe this new quarterly report will add value for our members.”

ISPA will continue to enhance and refine the new product. Among current plans, the new report will:

* Simplify mattress data reporting to include total mattress sales on a quarterly basis, replacing monthly reports and innerspring vs. non-innerspring categories.

* Include more accurate data on imported mattresses. Previously, ISPA published official US import data for mattresses, which included a confusing mixture of both human and pet beds. ISPA has worked with US Customs and others to develop different reporting criteria that will provide the industry with more accurate data, focused only on imported human mattresses.

* Help our members and subscribers access information faster and more easily by making the reports more versatile and user-friendly.

ISPA’s statistical program includes the new Bedding Market Quarterly, Mattress Industry Forecast (a semi-annual forecast of industry shipments) and its Annual Report of Sales and Trends, which takes a comprehensive look at current and historical mattress industry performance.

Largest U.S. bedding manufacturer mandates all products use foam that meets standards for content, emissions and durability

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Serta, the largest mattress producer in the United States, announced that the flexible polyurethane foam contained in all of its mattresses manufactured in the United States and Canada are now certified through the CertiPUR-US®-certification program.

CertiPUR-US is a not-for-profit certification program for flexible polyurethane foam used in bedding and upholstered furniture. Certified foams meet rigorous standards for content, emissions and durability, and are analyzed by independent, accredited testing laboratories.

Certified foams are made without ozone depleters; PBDE, TDCPP, TCEP and certain other flame retardants; formaldehyde; mercury, lead and other heavy metals; prohibited phthalates regulated by the CPSC; and are low VOC emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million).

“Consumers can rest confidently, knowing that all Serta mattresses and foundations that are available for purchase in stores and online today contain flexible polyurethane foam that is certified,” said Andrew Gross, senior vice president of marketing for Serta. “The comfort of our customers has always been paramount and today comfort goes beyond physical properties to include feeling good about the products we bring into our homes.”

“Consumers interest in certified foam for bedding and upholstered furniture has risen dramatically in recent years, and Serta’s participation in the program is a huge milestone for the program as a whole,” said executive director of the CertiPUR-US® program, Mike Crowell.

Poor sleep associated with increased risk of heart attack and stroke

* Poor sleep is associated with increased risk of heart attack and stroke, according to results from the WHO MONICA study.

Poor sleep is associated with increased risk of heart attack and stroke, according to results from the WHO MONICA study. The research was presented at EuroHeartCare 2015 by Professor Valery Gafarov, professor of cardiology at the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in Novosibirsk, Russia.

EuroHeartCare is the official annual meeting of the Council on Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions (CCNAP) of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). The 2015 meeting is held 14 to 15 June in Dubrovnik, Croatia, in collaboration with the Croatian Association of Cardiology Nurses.

Professor Gafarov said: “Mortality from cardiovascular diseases accounts for nearly 50% of the total mortality among the population. Nearly 80% of deaths from cardiovascular disease are due to myocardial infarction (heart attack) and stroke. It means that today we are talking about an epidemic of cardiovascular disease. It is therefore necessary to engage in intensive prevention of risk factors leading to the development of cardiovascular diseases.”

He continued: “Sleep disorders are very closely related to the presence of cardiovascular diseases. However, until now there has not been a population based cohort study examining the impact of sleep disorders on the development of a heart attack or stroke.”

The research was part of the World Health Organization (WHO) program “MONICA” (Multinational Monitoring of trends and determinants in Cardiovascular disease) and the “MONICA-psychosocial” substudy. It investigated the relationship between sleep disturbances and the risk of developing a heart attack or stroke in the long-term.

The study included a representative sample of 657 men aged 25 to 64 years with no history of heart attack, stroke or diabetes in Novosibirsk, Russia. Sleep quality was assessed when the study began in 1994 using the Jenkins Sleep Scale. Very bad, bad or poor ratings were considered a sleeping disorder. Cases of myocardial infarction and stroke were recorded over the next 14 years.

During the study period, nearly two-thirds (63%) of participants who had a heart attack also had a sleeping disorder. Sleeping disorders are closely associated with negative affective states (anxiety, depression, hostility, vital exhaustion). They are connected with the social gradient and are a manifestation of social stress in the population.-

Men with a sleeping disorder had a risk of myocardial infarction that was 2 to 2.6 times higher and a stroke risk that was 1.5 to 4 times higher than those without a sleeping disorder between 5 and 14 years of follow up.

Professor Gafarov said: “Sleeping disorders were associated with greatly increased incidences of both heart attack and stroke. W also found that the rates of heart attack and stroke in men with sleeping disorders were related to the social gradient, with the highest incidences in those who were widowed or divorced, had not finished secondary school, and were engaged in medium to heavy manual labor.”

He added: “Sleep is not a trivial issue. In our study it was associated with double the risk of a heart attack and up to four times the risk of stroke. Poor sleep should be considered a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease along with smoking, lack of exercise and poor diet. Guidelines should add sleep as a risk factor to recommendations for preventing cardiovascular disease.

Professor Gafarov continued: “For most people, good quality sleep is 7 to 8 hours of rest each night. People who are not sleeping well should speak to their doctor. Our previous research showed that sleeping disorders are very closely connected with depression, anxiety and hostility, so speaking with a psychologist may also help.”

Drink milk for higher quality sleep

Experts say that a good sleep is the basic factor for both physical and mental health besides healthy and balanced diet. They also emphasize on the positive effects of milk consumption by noting that it contains vitamin B6, B12 and other essential nutrients.

Nuh Naci Yazgan University Faculty of Health Sciences, Nutrition and Dietetics President Prof. Dr. Nariman Faith, gender, age, saying that the factors affecting the sleep of physical activity and nutrition, said that certain foods and beverages sleep affects.

Common needs of humans, sleep accounts for one third of our lives on the average and the body rejuvenates itself during sleep. Sleeping is essential for a healthy body as much important as breathing, eating and exercising. Serotonin in the milk effects sleep quality positively and every people of every age have to drink two cups of milk daily.

President of Dietetic department of Nuh Naci Yazgan University, Prof. Dr. Neriman Inanc, has pointed out that the amount of need for sleep depends on the age, gender, diet, activity, health status of the people and some of the foods and drink affects the sleep quality.

Sleep periods of people may change depending on the surrounding environment and individual characteristics. She said, “Sleep needs of children is about 10-12 hours a day, for a healthy adult it is 6-9 hours, and even up to 6.5 hours in older people.”

“Caffeine is a stimulant drug and caffeine-containing beverages taken before bedtime (coffee, tea, cola) will make it difficult to sleep. Studies showed that diets that rich on fat and refined carbohydrates, and lack of consumption of vegetable, and disordered meals, have negative impacts on sleep.” she said.

Reminding that in many western countries milk cow is accepted as a calming food, Neriman Inanc said: “Milk contains melatonin tryptophan, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 effective on quality  of sleep, is one of the main food sources good for quality sleep. Without having regular sleep it is not possible to talk about the mental and physical health of the people. People of each age group have to consume milk if they want a healthy life.”

Brits put at huge health risk by not seeking professional advice before selecting their mattress

Despite spending more than half of our lives in bed, a new study has revealed a massive 57 per cent of consumers neglect to seek advice when purchasing a new mattress – and it could be having a big detrimental impact on their sleep and overall health.

According to the findings from the British Chiropractic Association (BCA) in partnership with leading bed manufacturer Sealy, a massive 40 per cent of us spend less than half an hour selecting this vital household item – shorter than the average power nap and despite the fact the average consumer keeps theirs for eight to 10 years.

In doing so, we’re putting our health at risk – potentially selecting a mattress which is wrong for our body type and individual sleeping habits. Sealy has found that a regular good night’s sleep can significantly improve our health – helping the body to repair itself and boosting the immune system. However, the BCA has warned that an unsuitable mattress can significantly contribute to back and neck pain, impacting on the quality of rest people can get.

Despite the health implications of having a good night’s rest, of the small percentage of people who do actually seek advice when buying a new mattress, the majority simply look quickly online (16%) instead of speaking with a professional from the industry. Shockingly only 1 per cent would consult with their neighbors, 4 per cent with friends and just 9 per cent seek guidance from a qualified chiropractor.

Neil Robinson, Sealy’s sleep expert said: “Our study indicates that people aren’t taking their sleep seriously, underestimating the impact of a mattress on their everyday lives and wellbeing. That’s why we’ve teamed up with the BCA to encourage people to seek professional guidance when choosing a new bed or mattress.

There may be a misconception that “a mattress is a mattress” but this really isn’t the case – different products offer different benefits catered for individual sleep requirements – from zonal support to the materials used in production. That’s why we’ve developed our innovative bed selector, to make the process clearer and easier for consumers. We hope our study, and the new application, encourage people to take more time to consider the model and features they opt for before making a commitment.”

Rishi Loatey from the BCA said: “People don’t realize just how important a suitable bed and mattress is for their back. We all come in different weights, shapes and sizes so, given we spend a third of our lives in bed, it makes sense to find the best possible bed to give the optimum level of support and comfort.

“We recommend you spend as much time as possible choosing a new bed or mattress – and try it out before you buy it! Chiropractors generally recommend that you should sleep on your back or side and when lying on your side, your spine should be parallel to the mattress and not be sagging or bowing.”

BRN runs step by step to targets for 2023

brn

Emphasizing on natural products, the company aims to have 100 stores by 2023. Selling 80% of exports in European countries, BRN aims to open 22 stores in abroad by 2018. Berna Ilter, general manager of the company informed us about her company and activities.

What distinguishes your brand from other companies?

We have chosen not to be a common producer of mattress. We invested in technology and improved our know how by contacting largest mattress producers in the world. 80% of our mattress exports go to European countries. Italy, the heart of design, Europe, North Africa, Meddle East and South America are our major markets. Even we sold to Micronesia, as the first Turkish exporter in 2013. We solved transportation problems by offering pressed and rolled packaging. We export to more than 60 countries, because we offer them a wide range of models by studying what people want.

What is more important in sleep products?

Ergonomic products of our company grouped into four, spinal supporting Ergo mattresses, BRN ortho mattresses made of traditional spring systems, visco mattresses, and BRN style specially produced mattresses. We have spring, foam types of mattresses besides bases, headsets, handcrafted, movable bases and other sleep products. We design custom made products, as well. We have annual production capacity of 750 thousand mattress and about one million pieces of mattress covers.

Natural products are the latest trend. What do you have in this field?

We are able to produce every kind of products that are covered in sleep products category. We are one of the leading companies. Lately, we focused on natural themes. Royal Coil is our brand in this category, hand crafted by using natural materials. Our special packaging solutions for exports are helpful to increase the awareness and interest to our brand in both domestic market and in abroad.

In which way your company aims to support Turkey’s export targets for 2023?

As a successful exporter company, we targeted to sell our products in 100 countries by 2023. We also have increased the number of selling stores in domestic market, by getting stores in shopping malls and suitable points. They are selling well. We are acting step by step on the way of having 22 stores in abroad by 2018.

What is your opinion about the consciousness of consumers on sleeping?

The importance of healthy sleep experiences is now being aware of, lately in the world. Natural materials and elements have become more attractive, because chemical complexes are hazardous for health. Natural products are also good for the mattresses, because they have higher permeability of air and moist, and are more hygienic. Mattresses made of plant-based materials and fibers such as horsehair are becoming more popular in the market. Hygiene is highly important for us, because about 25 years of humans having 70 years of life expectancy are spent during sleep. So the matters related with sleep are all have to be dealt accordingly.

Your mattresses have been certified as hygienic products. What is your advise for other manufacturers?

We got the first hygiene certificate for mattresses that were earlier given only to food producers. Hygiene is our first priority in our production facilities, because, customers have to feel themselves in safety and in comfort. We have to mention the fact that we do not reflect the outdated Oeko-Tex, a certificate given semi- finished products, in our final products. We got this certificate for our final products at the stage of delivery to consumers. We advise consumers to be careful on this fact. Besides we are demanding an auditing mechanism about the hygiene and materials of the productions. It prevents un-fair competition and is good for the health of kids and aged people.

Would you evaluate recent developments in the market, as one of the leading names in the business?

In a world of competition, new rivals are emerging 7/24 on every part of the globe. Our handicaps in transportation costs should also be taken into account. So have to improve our competitive power continuously. We have to have a distinguishing competitive advantage over our rivals. First we managed to reduce our transportation costs by re-adjusting our packaging and delivery system. Vacuumed and rolled press packaging saved us costs by 3 to 4 fold. It reduced our freight and storage costs. Ready to deliver packages and lower costs of cargo also helped our sales to increase through online channels.

After sale services are becoming more important as the sales and delivery services. What does your company do in these fields for the benefit of your buyers?

Again, our packaging and form of products has become more practical for retailers and customers who now can buy and transport the mattresses by themselves. Innovation may take many forms including in the product and in delivery and packaging. Now our products have become products that can be sold at shopping centers, not only in special furniture and mattresses stores. Mattresses have become a mass commodity to be bought at every point of sales. I called this innovation in distribution. Our product SleepBox has become a retail good. Besides, we try to make innovations in our visual materials, supply of materials, in technological solutions, in business relations and cost reduction solutions.

Selling furniture and sleep products, Alfemo increases coverage by opening additional concept stores. Having 95 stores in Turkey and 35 in abroad, the company aimed to reach 160 stores by the end of the year. Marketing manager Suleyman Zoral informed about his company.

How was last year for your firm?

It was not so unfavorable though some problems in and out of the country had economic effects. Our firm was not affected. Change in sales was up in furniture business in general. We have grown 25% in 2015, in furniture, youth, kids, bases and headsets segments.

How fare the activities in retail?

We opened 95 stores in Turkey and 35 stores in abroad in 2015. In 2016 we targeted to open 20 additional store in the country and 10 stores in different parts of the world. Our stores are concentrated around Istanbul and other large cities. We will catch the 160 stores limit this year.

To which regions have you directed your exports recently?

Problems in close markets have caused us to divert our focus to Latin America and African countries. Last year we opened stores in Dubai, Arab and Asian countries. The USA and Canada are our other targets.

What kind of products do your customers demand?

Consumers have become more conscious and know more about mattresses. Customers naturally demand for healthier and comfortable products, because one third of their daily life is spent in sleep. We, as a manufacturer of mattress, also seek better ways and solutions to make them happy, healthier and rested. With this aim we do necessary changes in our products.

Do you have any example to show about your R&D efforts?

In cooperation with an American company, Legget&Platt, we brought so called Hi-Low technology, that is made of both higher and smaller springs. We emphasized on both comfort and health of people. We made a mattress for doubles. We used different spring schemes in two sides of the mattress. Men are taller and heavier then women. Locations of springs and paddings are also arranged accordingly to provide the best quality of sleep for both sexes. We have very soft mattresses, Selpur, that is made of materials beyond latex technology. When technology used in production heavily, health benefits of the products are maximized. Customers can return unconditionally the mattress they bought, in 90 days if they are not satisfied with the product. We have been offering this guarantee of satisfaction for three years. It is not new for us.

Doğtaş’s findings on Turkey’s sleeping habits

doğtaş

With the needs and expectations of its customers always at the forefront, Doğtaş has developed a range of products and services firmly with those customers in mind. This is proven by their expertise in the field of furniture manufacturing, and particularly in their production of mattresses. In order to identify the sleeping habits of the Turkish public and to establish a “sleep map” for the country, Doğtaş has teamed up with the survey company, Ipsos, and carried out research with almost a thousand participants.

While explaining the findings of this research, Doğtaş Kelebek CEO Hulusi Acar emphasized the various health benefits of getting a good night’s sleep, and that the key to getting that all-important rest is having a mattress that’s right for you. Acar went on to talk about the range of mattresses offered at Doğtaş concept stores, which are designed to meet the various needs and expectations of customers, and stated, “The most important element in getting healthy sleep is having the right type of mattress, and we’re really prioritizing our R&D into this.”

According to the “Sleep Habits Survey” carried out by Doğtaş, 1 in every 2 people said they fall asleep within 10-15 minutes of getting in bed, while 9 in 10 thought the most basic requirement and the most influential factor in getting a good night’s sleep was the quality of their mattress. It was also found that 52% of Turks prefer sleeping on their side, while 33% sleep face-down, and the remaining 15% sleep on their backs. In addition to sleep, 46% of participants said they would also lie down and relax in bed. Sleeping habits varied from region to region; people in the Marmaris and Aegean regions like listening to music before bed, while those in Central Anatolia and the Black Sea prefer to read before switching off the lights.

8 is the magic number

According to the findings of the research, Turks sleep for an average of 8 hours per night. 67% of participants go to bed between 23:00 and 01:00, and 50% wake up between 07:00 and 09:00. 42% wake up with an alarm, whereas 4 out of 10 are able to wake up without the help of an alarm or another person. 1 in 2 manage to fall asleep within 10-15 minutes of getting in bed, and the same number of people said they get out of bed within the same time frame after waking up.

We love sleeping on our side!

Doğtaş’s “Sleep Habits Survey” also discovered some interesting facts about which position Turkey likes to sleep in. Sleeping on the side is the most popular position, with 52% of participants reporting this as their preference. Next was sleeping face down, with 33% of those surveyed choosing that position. Just 15% of participants reported sleeping on their backs.

A bed’s not just for sleeping

The research also revealed that 46% of people like to lay down and relax in bed. When asked what they do in bed other than sleeping, 41% of those surveyed said they talk on the phone while lying down, 31% enjoy listening to music and 30% watch television.

We replace our mattresses every 7 years

9 out of 10 people see the quality of their mattress as the most basic requirement and the most influential factor in getting a good night’s sleep. Those 9 out of 10 indicated that the most important factors while choosing a mattress are its orthopedic qualities, its firmness and its ability to provide a “weightless” feeling while sleeping.

When asked what qualities would be included the perfect mattress, those in Central and East Anatolia said “it would have to be soft”; those in the Mediterranean said “it has to make you feel relaxed”; while those in the Black Sea region said “it has adapt to the shape of your body, and should keep you cool”. 1 in every 2 of those who said they use a spring mattress explained that they purchased their current one within the last 5 years, and on average, people replace their mattress every 7 years. 4 out of 10 women indicated they sleep on the right side of the bed, and not surprisingly, single people prefer to sleep in the middle.

The Doğtaş’s great night’s sleep guarantee

After evaluating the research findings, Doğtaş Kelebek CEO Hulusi Acar explained the various health benefits of getting a good night’s rest, and that the key to getting that high-quality sleep is having the right mattress. He also emphasized that the research had shown that 9 out of 10 people see the quality of their mattress as the most basic requirement and the most influential factor in getting a good night’s sleep. Acar went on to say, “Just as with the rest of our products, when it comes to mattresses, it’s really important for us to understand what our customers are looking for and to present that in the products we offer. We wanted to hear what the Turkish people want from their mattresses, not just across the country, but from region to region. This research hammers home once again the effect a good night’s sleep has on the overall health of an individual. We know that good quality sleep is only possible with a good quality mattress, and so we’ve been using the latest technology to produce mattresses which will be as good as the day they were bought for many years. More than a third of American adults are not getting enough sleep on a regular basis, according to a new study in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. This is the first study to document estimates of self-reported healthy sleep duration (7 or more hours per day) for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society recommend that adults aged 18–60 years sleep at least 7 hours each night to promote optimal health and well-being. Sleeping less than seven hours per day is associated with an increased risk of developing chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and frequent mental distress. “As a nation we are not getting enough sleep,” said Wayne Giles, M.D., director of CDC’s Division of Population Health. “Lifestyle changes such as going to bed at the same time each night; rising at the same time each morning; and turning off or removing televisions, computers, mobile devices from the bedroom, can help people get the healthy sleep they need.” Prevalence of healthy sleep duration varies by geography, race/ethnicity, employment, marital status CDC researchers reviewed data from the 2014 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a state-based, random-digit–dialed telephone survey conducted collaboratively by state health departments and CDC.

UYKUSUZLUK

Key Findings:

* Healthy sleep duration was lower among Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders (54 percent), non-Hispanic blacks (54 percent), multiracial non-Hispanics (54 percent) and American Indians/Alaska Natives (60 percent) compared with non-Hispanic whites (67 percent), Hispanics (66 percent), and Asians (63 percent).

* The prevalence of healthy sleep duration varied among states and ranged from 56 percent in Hawaii to 72 percent in South Dakota.

* A lower proportion of adults reported getting at least seven hours of sleep per day in states clustered in the southeastern region of the United States and the Appalachian Mountains. Previous studies have shown that these regions also have the highest prevalence of obesity and other chronic conditions.

* People who reported they were unable to work or were unemployed had lower healthy sleep duration (51 percent and 60 percent, respectively) than did employed respondents (65 percent). The prevalence of healthy sleep duration was highest among people with a college degree or higher (72 percent).

* The percentage reporting a healthy sleep duration was higher among people who were married (67 percent) compared with those who were never married (62 percent) or divorced, widowed, or separated (56 percent).

Healthy Sleep Tips:A

 * Healthcare providers should routinely assess patients’ sleep patterns and discuss sleep-related problems such as snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness.

* Healthcare providers should also educate patients about the importance of sleep to their health.

* Individuals should make getting enough sleep a priority and practice good sleep habits.

* Employers can consider adjusting work schedules to allow their workers time to get enough sleep.

* Employers can also educate their shift workers about how to improve their sleep. For more information on CDC’s Sleep and Sleep Disorders Program, please visit www.cdc.gov/ sleep.

Golden rules for better sleep

Prof. Okan Bolukbasi, neurology expert in Okan University, preaches on golden rules of a quality sleep: What is sleep?

It is rather difficult to describe it. Once it was thought as non-action part of life, now we know that it is an active period for our brain affecting our mental and physical health.

What factors cause insomnia?

Breath relieving drugs, sprays, caffeinated drinks, diet medications and unfavorable conditions in bedroom…

And cigarette?

Even more. Smokers sleep like rabbits, having the least REM sleep. They can only go into sleep in 3 to 4 hours, when the nicotine level was reduced. Also, alcohol is a factor, contrast to general perception it is not good for better sleep.

What is ideal duration of good sleep?

Newborns need 16 hours of sleep. For adults 7 to 8 hours is enough. Adolescences sleep nine hours. Pregnant needs more. Body gets back its share if the people do not meet its need for sleep. In line with aging, older people sleepless and become minimal after 65 years.

What are the problems caused by insomnia?

Almost all branches of medicine are related with sleep patterns. Attacks are more frequent during sleep especially just before dawn, because of changing pulse of hearth and hormone levels.

Are there any relation between insomnia and mental illnesses?

In most of the mental problems, sleep problems are seen. For example, depressive people wake up so early and they cannot go back to sleep.

What is sleep apnea?

Breathing stops while snoring. Having less oxygen during sleep causes headache and feel of tiredness, loss of libido, mental abilities, reduction of pulse and change of the rhythm. Apnea increases the risk of traffic accident three fold.

What is restless leg syndrome?

It is the cramps in the legs during sleep causing numbness, pinching and tingling sensations. The patient wants to constantly move his legs. It can be seen at any age. Anemia (iron deficiency), pregnancy and diabetes mellitus may lead to this situation. Patients are relaxed by administering dopamine,  a  biochemical stimulant.

Golden rules for better sleep

* If you are taking a nap during the day, do not exceed 30 minutes. Excessive napping affects the night sleep.

* Before you go to bed, stay away from stimulants like caffeine, nicotine. You can eat a high protein snacks and fruits 2-3 hours before sleep. These foods increase the consumption of sleep-regulating hormones. But stay away from cereal and sugar because sleep rhythm breaks down. Avoid fatty, fried, spicy, edible, carbonated foods and beverages.

* Exercise provides good sleep quality. A short 10-minute bike or hike will significantly increase the night’s sleep quality. However, do not exercise intensively during bedtime.

* Exposure to natural light all day long. Your bedroom should not be so bright at night.

* Get a useful relaxant habit before sleeping. Warm shower, book reading, light stretching exercises, contemplation, etc. Avoid pre-sleeping emotional speech or situations.

* Your bed linen, your pillow and bed should be convenient and comfortable. Your bedroom must be cool, not warm or even lukewarm. One of the signs that prepare the body to sleep is the fall of the ambient heat.

* Your bedroom should not have light and sound sources such as televisions, cell phones, etc. If necessary, you can have dark curtains, propellers, air humidifiers, and earplugs.

* Do not put any electric appliance closer than one meter. Do not use noisy alarms. They stir anxiety in the body.

* Just use your bed only to sleep. Go to bed as early as possible. 23.00 o’clock is the most ideal. Because it is time to renew our adrenal system between 23.00 and 01.00. We’d better be asleep in the meantime. The biliary artery also discharge poisons in this period. If you are awake, the poisons return back to the liver.

“If your bed is not right, you may harm your spine”

One third of our lives are spent in sleep, thus choosing right mattress becomes important for our spine health especially in the long run. Wrong mattresses may cause belly and  back aches that may be worsened in time. Cagatay Ozturk, associate professor in orthopedics and traumatology, advised people to use orthopedic mattresses if they do not want to have problems.

Cagatay OzturkOzturk says that a good mattress is to be as hard as to prevent the embedding of body in the mattress and be as comfortable as to keep the original form of their bodies, because, extremely softer or harder  mattresses than normal can force spine in long term. He adds that the best mattress for the health of spine is the one that has a form that minimizes the pressure on discs and spines. He said, “We have to protect our spinal bones both in sleep as well as we protect them day time. If it is so soft or hard it forces the normal posture of the people and the form of spine. Thus, we have to choose the right mattress  consciously. To lay down on bad mattress may cause aches in belly and spine in the long run. Later on, this leads to irreversible damages in the body. For this reason, orthopedic mattresses should be preferred.”

Ozturk has also said that, the mattresses must be as large as possible, because smaller mattresses may lower the sleep quality. The size of the mattress must be 20 cm longer than the height of the people, and at least 95 cm wide. It must keep the body right and support every part of the body in balance.
